Organization seeks 'immediate arrest' of Trump and Vance over Springfield hoax
Fixed the title. I read nothing to suggest that Trump or Vance are currently in any danger of being arrested in Springfield, Ohio.
Yeah, they do not "face immediate arrest" there have been calls to arrest them, but they face nothing.
I know the hexbear community loves that comic. Where is it from and what is the context?
It's from the Onion! The artist is Ward Sutton but he's drawing the comics from the point of view of a character named "Kelly" who is a parody of an old right wing guy (according to the Internet) who hates political correctness, hence the exaggerated scenarios in the comics. The "haha yes" sickos guy (who I guess sometimes shows up in a thought bubble) usually feels like a parody of how the right views various left wing policies in that the comic overplays / exaggerates the disastrous effects of said policies (to make fun of how absurd those fears are) while the "leftist sickos" cheer on the disastrous results.
The comics basically make fun of how extremely the right views progressive policy and the sickos guy is kind of pointing out how absurd it is to view someone as bad faith (ie a sicko knowingly cheering on the disastrous effects of a progressive policy) who supports something as simple as green energy, drug legalization, or bike lanes. It's fun to use as a reaction image to anything progressive happening because obviously wanting something like for example affordable healthcare obviously doesn't make you a sicko. (Or in this case wanting a terrible person to actually face actual legal consequences for the harm they've done)
Thanks for explaining!
I'm beginning to think RawStory exaggerates their headlines for clicks. An organization has asked a court to arrest them, a FAR cry from facing immediate arrest.
RawStory faces immediate arrest for spreading disinformation and falsely representing ongoing legal situations!
Ha, I wish!
Edit: Wait... If we send a message to a court, we can make it happen!
Also, gotta ask, is your name from the old Marvel villain or?
Nope, that bastion couldn't tolerate the existence of mutant powers. This bastion, not only has no problem with mutant powers, but downright enjoys them.
I notice you're not denying the super powered robot from the far future part...
I think that if you're a robot boop capable of enough complexity (including having a tendency towards dynamically stable emotive field states), and can interface with a body and society well enough to remain comparatively indistinguishable from a human, that makes you human, right? beep anyways, time is relative, right?
Wow. Just looked into your comment history. Wow.
Seems you really need some good things in your life. Let us know if we can help.
wow, just read this comment, wow, what a string of words ordered in such a specific manner to demonstrate a specific concept.
Seems like you just need some more strings of words in your life. Let us know if you need any examples of better or different strings of words.
He's fine.
He's also right. The headline is shit.
They really aren't
You're not helping anyone.
Seems like you two visit all the exact same threads, huh? Not weird at all.
There aren't many people here I see the same people in almost all the threads I post in here
Seems like you're projecting when you claim others might need help.
Touch grass.
In their comment history, I see discussing exercise, talking about their (positive) social interaction with their community, and arguing (politely) about niche leftist issues. You may not like it, but this is the ideal lemmy lifestyle. Yours is a bunch of catty speculation at other people needing help because they disagree with you.
I'm not going to look into the parent poster's history, but they are right. As much as I despise Trumpists, the GOP and the media enabling them, RawStory is no better. Whenever I see such headline, I get to say "let me guess... yup. RawStory." I'm this close to blocking them. I'm done with yellow press, be it from Fox News, Breitbart or, yes, RawStory. Give me something more objective, like APNews*, for example.
*I don't like APNews movie critics, to be fair.
I looked. The guy is pretty normal.
I absolutely despise Donald. But RawStory headlines are nearly as false as the drivel coming out of his mouth.
But they're right tho
Wow. Not you too.
jk, I checked, op is definitely the one out of line here - no idea what they're on about actually
? What in there got you so upset? The notion that playing sports could be fun? The horror of someone, ugh, criticizing communism?
"There's nothing special about Trump and Vance that entitles them to get away with what they've done and are doing," the attorney added. "They think they're above the law. They're not."
Except for the Senate Republicans who would not hold their own accountable for crimes they committed or the federal supreme Court Justice feeding Trump's attorney legal advice to use in the lower courts. And the billions in PAC funds and trinket grifts used to campaign for politicians and appoint judges who are loyal to them above the Constitution and citizens. And anything Trump did as president is legal if he says it was part of the job. Except for those facts sure they're just like you or me in the eyes of the law.
Yeah, you can't even pretend that Trump isn't above the law when the Supreme Court has literally ruled that he is at their discretion.
Technically the ruling was for crimes official acts he committed while in office.
He's no longer president and holds no privilege, except being the Republican nominatee for President. Which apparently is a protected class.
Correct. Regardless, it has been codified that he IS above the law in some cases. Slippery slope is not a fallacy in this instance.
even as a president, this wouldn't be protected under the immunity act, only presidential actions. Speaking to the public, as far as i am concerned is not considered to be a core "presidential action" in the government.
SCOTUS has decreed that SCOTUS alone can determine what is an official act.
while this is true, they still have a basis to operate under. There are certain things that aren't official acts. Posting on social media wouldn't be one. There are things that are, and those have absolute immunity (bad) there are also things that have presumptive immunity (which means you have to rule on whether or not these are admissible evidence) and this has had a direct effect on the jan 6th hearing, removing like 9 pages of communication between government officials, which is about all they could remove from the hundreds of pages that were there already.
I believe this would be a state issue though, so some of that doesn't apply.
Tempted to remove as "Fox by Proxy" but here's an alternate source which confirms the story and raises an excellent point:
“If it were anyone else other than Trump and Vance who had done what they’ve done — wreak havoc on Springfield, resulting in bomb threats, evacuated and closed government buildings and schools, threats to the mayor and his family — they would have been arrested by now,” Chandra said. “They are not above the law.”
Chandra said the U.S. Supreme Court's July ruling granting ex-presidents broad immunity from criminal prosecution does not apply in this case because Trump is currently a private citizen and Vance was not acting in his capacity as a senator when he amplified the rumors that members of Springfield’s 15,000-member Haitian community were eating people’s pets.
"If it were anyone else ... they would have been arrested by now,” Chandra said. “They are not above the law.”
Those two sentences don't add up.
Yeah. "They shouldn't be above the law." works better.
They add up to "therefore they should be attested".
"They are not above the law" is the justification for calling for their arrest.
So this is the real reason why Trump cancelled his Springfield visit.
Trump's scared that Vance's family will eat Laura Loomer
I don’t understand. Is Laura Loomer a brand of couch I haven’t heard of?
Yes. Please don’t research Laura Loomer any further
I think she'd have more to be worried about with Robert Kennedy around talking to Trump. Trump is so easy to control and that dude needs help.
If you ever needed to plumb the depths of American bigotry, it's Trump appearing on stage glad-handing a dog eater and then making up some bullshit about Haitians.
I thought it was when he had a public meeting at his home with a fucking self-admitted Nazi.
"i'm still voting for trump!"
--this fucking guy
Sonos DeWine, that shady fuck.
All the lawfare makes me more likely to vote for Trump every day.
Seeing the existing power structure try all this anti democratic bullshit to take him down makes me think he must have something they don’t.
Yea the anti-democratic bullshit like lemme check my notes making him accountable for the countless felonies he committed?
Get the fuck out of our America you traitor trash.
LOL gtfo
you were always voting for trump
No no no. He was totes "undecided" until this one issue. As soon as the next issue crops up, he'll again switch from undecided to trump. He will continue this trend as long as he thinks someone will be convinced. He's the common clay of the new west and he will be heard.
I'd say more like night soil than clay
Da, comrade! Is good candidate, nyet?
Bro he's a criminal who staged a coup in any other time in history he would've been executed immediately
Accountability for actions that effect people other than yourself is necessary for a healthy democracy. Your problem is mistaking accountability for persecution.
brother, trump LITERALLY tried to overthrow democracy, we're literally JUST trying to hold him accountable for this, and it's failing at EVERY possibly opportunity because of republicans.
Also, literally none of this is anti democratic. This is literally why we have the courts and the DOJ and the supreme courts, these all exist to insure that nobody steps too far out of line.
More likely to vote for a bigot & rapist? Sounds good lol
I think it would be pretty hilarious if this was the thing that got Trump in jail. Aaaaaall the other stuff? Nah. but this Springfield hoax? Yeah we got to do something about that.
Al Capone got put away for Tax Evasion, so anything is possible I guess.
If only the IRS had the teeth now as it did then, we'd never heard about this trump fellow.
We probably would have heard about him going to prison in the 80s.
Silly billies. Don't they know that the law doesn't apply to rich people?
Still, good on them for trying and further bringing into the collective consciousness that this is the case.
Good on them for trying.
As fucking if lmao
Trump isn't ever going to actually go to jail. That would set a precedent for us to actually keep our political leaders accountable, and that ain't happening.
If anything, they've done everything to excuse outright corruption in the US government. SuperPACs, bribes, it's all getting legitimized. You can't even hear reports criticizing civil asset forfeiture not only because the practice is so widespread, but now people are more concerned about even worse things. A massive and overcrowded private prison system being used as a system of low or non-existent labor akin to slavery? Last decade's news.
Please, tell me how the US was founded as a revolution from tyranny and corruption again. Was that the policy when manifest destiny trampled on native American lives and left them in enclosed casinos? The US has always been about colonizers and subjugation, and even to this day continues to support modern world colonizers who, lacking the absence of modern civilization, rationalize the natives as militants when they oppose and make sure to place them besides terrorists. It speaks volumes to the sad state of global affairs that they are still the better option in terms of global superpowers to ally with.
The US compares itself to and lets itself be shaped by the lowest common denominator. Anything better, too socialist - but nevermind the small group of oligarchies power is organized around who do get the socialist treatment anyway.
Learning about USA history in high school radicalised me.
As you said, manifest destiny was just the same old colonialism they claimed to oppose, just with a religious excuse.
The US education system does teach US history and critical thinking, but applying it to itself is another thing entirely. The means are still there, so it's no coincidence that there has been a movement to shaft the US education system an promote things like homeschooling.
there will be parades and celebration on his death though. hell never be forgotten, but not the way he wants.
Well that's one way to keep them out of your city while campaigning. Can we do that here in MI? I'm sick of them being here every week.
Have an immigrant file a suit for libel (or slander...I forgot which is which. Hell, both).
Libel, like library
I'll believe it when I see it.
It's now a talking point, which is good.
It might not be true, but by golly people are talking about it which is what counts!
You wouldn't know the truth if it slapped you in your willfully ignorant face.

If you could make this match, that would be great!
I'm sure that will work. "ONE SIMPLE TRICK THE REPUBLICANS DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT."
Yeah mate, a criminal record
Lock them up! Lock them up! Lock them up!
Why are politicians not accountable for spreading lies? Not even ridiculous ones like this?
Lets hope they get this done. Trump and Vance as prison buddys, now that is something I'd love to see.
Send them to prison and hide the couches.
Naw. Just cover the cushions in sand.
Sand would be uncomfortable, put powdered glass in between the cushions and put fiberglass covers on the cushions.
Would love to see it happen, but I won’t hold my breath.
They’ve already ruined their reputations themselves, honestly keep it up🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿
And for the half of Americans that continue to support them without question after having done so, honestly. Half of the American flag should be drenched in sewage to reflect how they are leaving the reputation of the US within and outside of it.
I don't think half of Americans support him.
Hang 'em both.
"there's no room for political violence"
LOL /s
fuck both those ass holes
Stochastic terrorism needs to have more severe criminal penalties for career politicians specifically. Right-wing figureheads have been getting away with this shit for too long.
We're now penalizing the parents of school shooters, so if we find out that someone who threatens to bomb a school is a super fan of X person, then X person should face some sort of penalty if they continually put out deliberate lies about said school. We did a version of this with Alex Jones already, just follow through with that logic honestly.
Ugh, Trump's looking especially hideous in that picture!
::: spoiler Raw Story - News Source Context (Click to view Full Report)
Information for Raw Story:
Yeah of course they do. Nobody is surprised that the DNC is desperate to take these guys down legally.
Trump has faced two assassins in seven weeks for fuck’s sake. They’re desperate.
The would-be assassins were your people. All types of Americans are sick of your traitorous felon.
Leave it to democrats to take a question about basic decency that massively works in their favor, and turn it into a dubious question of whether a criminal law was violated beyond a reasonable doubt.
the article is about the Haitian Bridge Alliance filing criminal charges because of the effects the "Haitian immigrants eating our dogs" lie has caused. This has nothing to do with party sides and everything to do with cause and effect. Jd vance openly said on tv that if he has to lie to get people's attention then he'd do it, and now we're seeing what happens when you mobilize a large part of the country to harass and discriminate against legal Haitian immigrants who are just trying to live their lives like anyone else.
Now as far as slander goes, the courts would need to decide if malice was involved in the statements that at least one of them has openly admitted to being* false.
Of course this could all just be avoided by not telling lies.
Lol WITF does that even mean? Leave it to Democrats to say the thing that people care about and promise to do something about it?
ARE YOU OKAY?
Maybe instead of resorting to exaggerated dismissals and suggesting I lack sanity, think about it for a minute because I think once you do, it's pretty obvious.
What they should do about it is use it to win and keep Trump out of the White House. If they turn it into a criminal law issue it'll confuse the matter and turn what should be an argument about right vs. wrong into legal vs. illegal. There exists a realm of behavior, quite a large realm in fact, of things that are deplorable but not illegal. Such as waving an ISIS flag, or walking around in a Hitler moustache and armband. That's where Trump's behavior fits.
This is why when a Nazi gets criticized, the first thing they do is cry "free speech". Because by making it a legal matter, they're picking the best hill for them to fight on. They skip the question of whether their behavior is reprehensible, and fight a battle they can win - whether it's legal.
So if you want to do Trump the biggest favor imaginable, decide to fight this in the courts. Make the question "Is it legal to be racist" because we all know the answer is yes, and even if it wasn't the courts (especially in red Ohio) are heavily in Trump's favor and have repeatedly shown willingness to help him out. That way we can have a dismissal and headlines "Trump wins again" and pictures of him with a big smile on his face. See: Just about every past time Trump has been brought to court, or charged with impeachment.

they literally already tried to impeach him, twice over this. None of them worked because of republicans lmao.
Yes, which is why it's bad to go where Republicans (legislators or judges) have all the power. Go to the media, hollywood, whatever. Why isn't there a movie about the first Trump administration's crimes yet? Go straight to the people.
the federal government was a complete mess after the end of trumps term. The supreme court is pushing out unconstitutional rulings that don't even make sense for it to preside over. The congress is so mind fucked that it can't even fix basic problems like immigration without impaling itself over it's own knife. Courts are delaying rulings for no reason other than to push it beyond the election, these courts are also fraught with judges who should be barred (aileen cannon) republican figures themselves are literally lying about shit live on television to garner support for things that don't exist. Springfield ohio is a terrible place to be right now. People who worked at dominion received constant death threats after fox news ran the dominion story, then got sued and settled for "defamation" as a fucking news company, do you realize how bad you have to fuck up to settle a defamation case immediately? AS A FUCKING NEWS BROADCASTER. Every politician that has ever slighted trump has had their career ruined, except for democrats, republicans really love to eat their own for some reason. I can keep going if you would like.
Trump barely managed to push any legislation through the government, he kneecapped basically every cabinet and group within the government (including the pandemic response one)
Regardless the rest of your comment is a diversion.
Why isn’t there a movie about the first Trump administration’s crimes yet?
(relevant to the first two links) i can upload the entire stream on archive.org and post a link here if you would like, i have it archived myself.
and this is just jan 6th, if you were to compile EVERY thing that trump did throughout his admin, it would probably be hundreds of hours long. Not to mention the only reason why you seem to think a movie would be a good format for this, is because that's how republicans are pushing modern propaganda these days.
Fixed the title. I read nothing to suggest that Trump or Vance are currently in any danger of being arrested in Springfield, Ohio.

Regardless the rest of your comment is a diversion.
there is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1NUXFfcoDs
and an accompanying two hour retrospective. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPIedGtAJfw
there is another creator who has done something similar as well. https://youtu.be/gdstZDCCgAc
