What fresh fuckery is this? 🤦

That's a rhetorical question, in case there's any doubt. I know the exact what and why of their bullshit.

Another attempt at blocking ad blockers

we need an adblockers blockers blocker

we need an adblockers blockers blocker

no, what is needed is an app that helps track who benefits from thr apps that annly you most:

  • ownership of companies pushing annoying ads
  • management of companies pushing annoying ads
  • find the connection between those and the products you maybe want to buy in shops or in internet before you buy, then instead of buying, let the app send the seller a message that you did not buy because of that connection.
  • do this in numbers with lots of people and see what happens to the advertising jungle

the point is NOT buying because of advertising AND let them know it, so they can learn to improve themselves.

they wanted your data? let them have it the way you want them to.

same with any platform. ask the creator of your choice to also publish using patreon and you'll become a member then, getting the content free of ads. better more directly pay who does the actual work, not all the big tech harvesting all the benefit inbetween.

so what maybe is needed here could be a free or even self-hostable platform that also allows payed subscriptions.

I think they are clamping down and trying to force people to watch yt in Google's desired way. They have managed to stop most Piped instances via ip banning and also requesting users to "sign in to confirm you are not a robot". I wish their was a proper alternative at this point. It would be great if something like Peertube took off.

I use SmartTube on my TV and NewPipe on my phone. Except for links from Lemmy.

If this bullshit is/becomes a thing for every YouTube video, I'm gonna have to do a lot of annoying copying and pasting or just eschew pretty much all videos on Lemmy 🤬

Agreed on Peertube btw.

i got NewPipe set as default, so links from Lemmy open there instead of the YT app

I finally managed to do that too, so there's that 🖕 to Google. And then the specific video hit me with the dreaded "not available in your country" bullshit 🤦

I wonder could someone write an app that watches the clipboard for YouTube URLs and auto launches the desired app?

You can uninstall YouTube and set newpipe as default "YouTube" app, all links will be open in that

UntrackMe, doesn't open an app, but redirects to a chosen Invidious instance. I use farside.link/invidious which chooses a random instance closer to you.

There is a similar thing already written, minus the automatic part. You set it as your default browser and lets you do all sorts of things to the link before opening it in a browser. It lets you choose which app to use the link in afterwards. You can unshort urls, it checks for malware or redirects... You get the picture. Not sure if this helps with what you are after:

https://f-droid.org/packages/com.trianguloy.urlchecker/

Alternatively, just use the share link on any function, and route it to the appropriate app. In this case, share a Youtube Link to the official app or to NewPipe.

Not necessary, apps can register to open links from specific domains.

The only caveat is that if they don't also own the domain - like Google owns both youtube.com and the YouTube Android app - you have to manually go to the settings for the app in System Settings and enable them, under 'Open by default'.

  • 1000 for SmartTube!! I finally side-loaded uYou for my iphone and last time I used my android tablet I was able to update reVanced but thats been forever ago.

Might be cool to start advocating for some YouTube creators to also post their stuff on federated video hosting/sharing instances. Peertube is pretty cool. I mean shit, if any of you are thinking of being creators, and you make a video, put it both on YouTube and some Peertube instance.

Edit: replaced a word with "instance" and added word "instance"

Unfortunately creators need to be paid and YouTube ad & subscription money is a big part of that for many of them.

By posting to elsewhere that won't pay them, they would be reducing their income

Shit, if anything anybody popular would be costing themselves money through hosting.

Unfortunately creators need to be paid and YouTube ad & subscription money is a big part of that for many of them.

By posting to elsewhere that won't pay them, they would be reducing their income

Plus, those other platforms don't have an audience.

Even Odysee, which has been around for several years, I only get 10s of views compared to the 3000-5000 that I get on youtube.

There are maybe a dozen non nuts on Odyssey. They're just drown out by the fascists.

Problem is:

Peertube doesn't pay

You have to pay for the backup/storage of your videos.

PT will have massive scaling pains.

Yt spends a lot of that advertising money hosting non profitable videos for free.

Whenever I have issues with YouTube refusing to do things it used to do, I stop using it for a while and eventually they put it back. If you're not willing to do that, I find that the NewPipe app is better than the native YouTube app. But be warned that occasionally Google makes changes that break New Pipe and you need to wait a couple days for the devs to catch up to the change.

Yeah, I've used NewPipe for ages, but YouTube links from Lemmy open in my browser, so I'm gonna have to copy paste into it, which is going to be all kinds of annoying 😡

Try turning on the desktop version of the site once the link is open in the browser.

Try Better Open With. Maybe you can set it to open YT links on NewPipe. Or Revanced as another option.

I tried BOW, but it didn't register Lemmy OR NewPipe as existing, so that was a dud.

I then realized that maybe I could set a global rule for all the YouTube addresses to open in NewPipe and I could so I did!

I then clicked the link that originally gave me the OP message. It opened in NewPipe.. And I got the fucking "not available in your country" message in stead!

Assuming Android: Settings -> Apps -> Your YT app -> Set as default -> Enable everything

"not available in your country" is easily fixed, just turn on your vpn

On my phone this can be set by going to settings, default apps, opening links, wait unusually long for the list to load, scroll to NewPipe, choose the links you want it to handle.

Yt won't let you use your web browser anymore? Why

So you'll download their spyware.

Or a client?

Third party clients might be next.

They've already been trying to kill them for a while now. Luckily for us they've only had limited success so far..

really, yt stopped to play sound on the website for me (beeing logged in), there is a banner to "activate sound" but it always disappears unclickable fast, so i searched and found webtube, an app that basically loads their website, but has one feature youtube has not: "sound" *lol

now i wonder how many of these apps really are "third" party apps and not really theirs only masked as third party for getting that gain of trust all the "others" get when it comes to big techs with their very own "public" crime records ...

would be too easy for them to create some small apps, act as if those were 3rd party software but harvest that spyoil (of the 21 century) anyway.

Same reason Facebook won't let you look at your messages through the website on mobile. (Unless you request the desktop site).

Everyone here is like "use this" "use that" which is great but the immediate solution is

switch to desktop mode

You're welcome

Greyjay has been working fine for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've really enjoyed greyjay. I don't yet have creators I follow outside of YouTube, but I love the concept.

unfortunately a lot of the bigger alternatives are just filled with right wing nutters. although hopefully apps like grayjay will make it easier for less political minded people find a home on other platforms

ReVanced, Grayjay, Newpipe

I loved Vanced, but never got ReVanced to work or tried GrayJay.

NewPipe works like a charm now that I have it set as the default app for all YouTube links, though 😁

You have to download the YouTube APK version ReVanced specifies in the compile step You can find the Apk on APKpure.

ReVanced is a hassle though.

Yeah, I did everything the documentation asked of me and did every relevant troubleshooter, just couldnt get that shit to work 🤷

NewPipe, on the other hand, just works perfectly immediately. Other than temporarily falling to Google's evil machinations against alternative frontends once, there's been absolutely no trouble with it.

One thing most guides don't show is that you have to match the YouTube app version with the suggestion. They implemented a handy search search button which searches for the needed app version in your browser too.

But if you do not need your account then Newpipe is excellent too.

Literally did this 10 hours ago using this guide: https://lemmy.world/post/857701. You need an earlier version apk than APKpure has though (19.16.39). I was surprised with how easy it is tbh. Just had to find a decent site to get that particular apk from but that's a simple Google search away.

Should be able to find previous version on apkpure aswell.

Usually typing "YouTube apk 19." On Google is enough for the currently required version to be in the autofill for me.

I've gone out of my way to make a cracked .IPA of YouTube (basic adocker + sponserblock + Downloader) for my phone to not have to deal with there stuff and it's held out so far. Just hope it keeps doing so

Is there a website or resource that describes this in more detail? First I've ever heard of a cracked .IPA

You must not be a beer drinker, then. I love cracking open an IPA after a long day.

it's a version of Uyou that you can find on GitHub. Tells you how, though you have to do a bit of the compiling yourself

Piped and Invidious

okay but what do we do about backing up the massive library of content that only exists on youtube? how do we back that shit up, so when they break those, it is't all lost forever?

You

Try

Distinguishing

Pizza

I've always asked "what does that ever mean?" Now, thsi answers my question

It could be that it's playing in a codec that your mobile browser doesn't support like av1 or something. Not sure though, is this happening with every video?

Surely it would fall back to mp4? Are some videos AV1/VP9 only?

I dont know if youtube has h264 support

They have always hosted AVC videos. They have to for old/incompatible devices, because literally any toaster and software on earth will play it.

But sometimes they are funny about what gets encoded to what, and of course they will always try to default to av1/vp9 and opus.

What browser are you using?

Firefox + uBlock Origin is still working for me right now.

Edit: hmm, could be a regional thing too. I'm in the US.

Use Smarttube instead on android tv and stbs Smarttube

For android phones, tablets: Tubular

In browser ublock blocks youtube ads, also invidious instances.

I'm already using SmartTube on my tv and Tubular's parent app NewPipe on my phone and now I finally have it set up so all links to YouTube addresses on my phone open in NewPipe so that I don't get this bullshit again 😁

Advertising for alternatives and/or unofficial apps

Yup! I was already using NewPipe for finding YouTube videos myself, but this is what spurred me on to find out how to also open every YouTube link i click in NewPipe 😁

Well that might just completely kill YouTube on mobile for me. The only way to watch on my phone without their ads.

I am slowly switching back to podcasts, it is only question of time when yt quality goes bellow usability, they are dancing around that thin line like with search.

Time to switch to Invidious.

Nah, I did one better and set NewPipe to open all YouTube links

This is all I get for the last week or so, no matter which video I try to open. I was about to delete the app for that. How is yours still working?

So this caused me to go digging as I've run into the same issue. Make sure it's up to date first obviously, and if it still refuses to function, their page has fixes which ended working for me:

https://newpipe.app/common-issues/

*Edit: also give it the option to switch to invidious API if the default fails; for a slightly more seamless experience

Have you updated recently? A few weeks ago there were some changes to YouTube that basically shut down newpipe and other similar clients, but an update should have fixed that.

Just reinstalled to make sure, but didn't help (see other comment)

Far as I can tell, that's the one I get when opening in Firefox and then switching to desktop mode.

Everything except geo-blocked vids works perfectly now that I have NewPipe set as the default app for all YouTube links, though, are you sure yours is updated?

I use the same setup as you, opening all YouTube links in the app. I just checked again, I have the latest fdroid version which is 3 weeks old and the issue persists, also did a reinstall for good measure.

I also have the tubular fork installed from the latest apk, and it has the exact same issue.

I also tried from different locations via VPN but nothing helps :/

Damn, that sucks 🙁 I'm afraid I don't know what you can do then, I'm sorry.. Maybe someone else here does, though?

PipePipe from f-droid is a clone that seems to update more frequently than newpipe, and has the additional benefit of being able to access the Chinese and Japanese video sites bilibili and niconico (worth checking out, it's fascinating even for someone who doesn't speak the languages)

I tried last night to view a video I saw someone on SpaceHey had in their main page and couldn't do it on my phone or desktop browser. Phone wasn't in any way doing anything outside of the standard ublock origin on Mull, which has never had issues if I ever needed an "emergency" yt lookup. Desktop browser Firefox based with libredirect wasn't working since I've been having issues connecting and using Invidious and Piped instances for a while.

Ended up having to switch to Freetube on my desktop to view the video and it was worth it. The errors I kept getting where to sign in to confirm I'm not a bot.

This was the video (assuming the instance is still up in the future)

Mobile browser worked for me, I used m.youtube.com instead of invidious

Finally a post that isn't about politics

Don't worry, it'll let up after November 4th, December 1st, January 6th, January 20th, Second Appomattox.

This is why I've always been confused about people telling me to use an ad-blocker. How tf does that help with the app?

I have NewPipe now so it's not a problem.

Use Odysee ffs.

I was curious so I googled searched on duckduckgo for it

attempting to solve some of these problems with blockchain technology.

Welcome to whiteboard crypto, the #1 Youtube channel for crypto education

If Odysee wasn't filled with so much racist, misinformed, crypto-slinging bullshit, maybe normal people would actually use it. Right now, the best solution is joining someone's patreon.

If Odysee wasn't filled with so much racist, misinformed, crypto-slinging bullshit

Deal with it. Otherwise you'll take every single monopolistic abuse from Google, and you'll just complain and keep using it

We are lol, the monopolistic bullshit from Google is still better then that alt-right crypto hell hole.

I'm not a Nazi

Would using Odysee turn you into one?

Yes

-_-

I'm OOTL here. Are we talking about a video hosting site that happens to have cringe on it?

Odysee and Rumble are the platforms that wackjobs (like flat earthers) have flocked to in the past year or so.

Those platforms aren't promoting that content per se, it's just that such content isn't moderated like on YouTube and Facebook. And before you say "but there's tons of that stuff on YouTube and Facebook already!" it doesn't compare.

I believe that. Like Gab, right? The scum sinks to the bottom.

If I understand correctly, I think I side with the people saying use it anyway. Video hosting is hard, and YouTube is more enshittified every day.

I think I side with the people saying use it anyway. Video hosting is hard, and YouTube is more enshittified every day.

Ya, I've been trying out YouTube alternatives, because YouTube/Google are just awful. I just have no idea where to land, but the Greyjay app is really helping with that.
