Tinder Launches $499 USD-Per-Month "Tinder Select" Membership::Tinder has rolled out its promised high-end membership, a pricey $499 per month subscription dubbed "Tinder Select," which includes unique perks like the

87

This is all absurd, obviously, but:

The new subscription can be stacked with a Plus, Gold or Platinum subscription for access to more features, the company notes.

$499 and you don't even get everything there is to get? You still have to pay for more? What in the fuck?

I can subscribe to a hooker for less and have more sex

Legalize

Shit they could probably include travel to an area with legal prostitution and still come out ahead.

I'm kind of surprised that not a single state has yet.

Like the states that legalized weed have made a bonkers amount of tax money while the others continue to lose out to other states or the black market. And oh look, suddenly way less drug crime.

Legalize it, regulate it, then tax it. The Netherlands figured it out. Kind of surprised Nevada hasn't taken their shot. A state could legalize it and watch their tourist and tax revenues skyrocket while likely lowering human trafficking to boot.

i honestly didn't know sex work was still illegal hopefully there's some society resurgence in support of them.

i feel like as a society if a topic isn't trending in news nothing happens to it.

In most countries it still is and basically always was illegal. I wouldn't hold your breath for the US any time soon, since half the states still can't get their shit together to legalize a harmless plant, and the puritanical pushback from the federal level if a state attempted to legalize prostitution, especially with a conservative administration, would probably be swift and immediate.

May I introduce Nevada? The only state with both casinos and brothels.

Lots of states have casinos, this country loves to gamble. My understanding though is the brothels are highly limited in Nevada. Like, they are severely limited to where they can operate. There's not actually any in Las Vegas, for instance.

It's hardly the model we should be copying.

I'm not against legalization of prostition or drugs, but the only thing The Netherlands figured out is that simply legalization doesn't make the problems go away. Both drug crime and human trafficking are still a big issue.

If you are at the point where paying $499+ a month looks like the only way you'll ever have a significant other or even just sex just invest that money in therapy or drugs or a super high end sex doll or a high class hooker but not in fucking Tinder. Jesus.

It’s probably like millionaire match maker where you get matched more with ppl who also paid $499

I'm guessing the only purpose of this is to show you have fuck-me money. Which sounds like it might work very, very well.

But if that’s the case just go to a club a pay for bottle service or something and invite some women to drink for free. Probably have better luck than trying to be splashy on Tinder hahaha

The ability to direct-message others without matching.

So basically your privacy only goes as far as how much other people are willing to pay

According to the article it'll be opt-out for "some accounts" on the receiving side. God only knows what they mean by that

If dating apps were barred from collecting any payments besides a one time entry fee perhaps they'd stop all these anti customers practices.

Good luck getting that to happen. Could probably happen in the EU if it hasn't already, but in the US, you'd have better luck winning a SLAPP suit against the Cult ("church") of Scientology in an area where they are legally allowed to file them against you.

Can we start a fediverse dating app?

I'm currently visiting the Ambien walrus writing this so forgive me if this idea is screwy, but I'd love to create a new space.

I was gonna say it didn't sound screwy until you mentioned the Ambien walrus, but, apparently, that's a real thing.

It is absolutely a real thing. I've done some wild things on it. But I'm glad the idea itself doesn't sound bad.

women are going to start saying they won't match with guys who aren't subscribing to this. I guarantee it.

women are going to start saying they won’t match with guys who aren’t subscribing to this. I guarantee it.

I assume they'll eventually just pay women to chat with these men.

I'm glad I was, continue to be and plan on being married to miss this nonsense.

Yeah. Few decades married over here too... Until last week. Still not paying for crap like this, but damn was that same joke not funny on Monday.

For 500$ it better work as a ma'adam in a brothel.

The "I'm that desperate" batch.

Oh not even that. Back when I used Tinder in 2019, and you were a guy, you pretty much had to buy Tinder gold or whatever it was.

Tinder limit your swipes, intentionally showed you dead profiles, and some other shit I forget.

Same with older people. If you're older, Tinder costs more.

Tinder is a predatory app. They benefit from you NOT finding a match.

I know there's no laws that allow the people of the USA to prosecute companies for business models that destroy the fabric of society, and I even fear that kind of law could be abused to prosecute abortion clinics and LGBT rights orgs...but dating apps make me wish there was.

Andrew Tate...PUAs...Red Pillers...it all only makes sense in a world where dating apps are the primary way we meet people.

I’m back on the dating scene in my early 30’s and I try to be hostile to their algorithm by force quitting and leaving the app closed which seems to trigger it to try and be more engaging.

I also tried gold only to have my filters just not work. Why would I be interested in matching someone 6000km away or someone with kids even though I’ve tried filtering them out? Ask Tinder I guess. Why would I pay for a service that doesn’t even work. Now that I’m not paying the “likes” seem to roll in even though I frequently run out of users for my area.

It just sounds like identifying rich sucker's to be plucked like apples and slaughtered like fattened calves by the trickier woman of tinder.

members can choose to display their status with an exclusive SELECT badge on their profile.

Now I ain't say she a gold digger...

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The news was first reported by Bloomberg, and follows parent company Match Group’s earlier confirmation that Tinder would expand its membership options to include a new, high-end product catering to Gen Z users sometime this fall.

Tinder says that less than 1% of users will be allowed to gain access to this premium product, and members can choose to display their status with an exclusive SELECT badge on their profile.

Inspiration for this members-only club within Tinder comes from Match’s July 2022 acquisition of another high-end dating app, The League, which could cost users up to $1,000 per week.

In addition, Select members’ profiles will be shown unblurred in the Like You grid in the app for up to seven days, even if they don’t pay for Tinder Gold or Platinum subscriptions.

The company doesn’t detail how this technology works or how it rates these so-called “exceptional connections,” but one might imagine they include other Select members or those other users liked the most.

To apply for Tinder Select, users must have at least four photos, five interests, a bio with a minimum of 15 characters, show a relationship intent, be photo-verified and, importantly, have way too much money to spend on dating apps.

The original article contains 514 words, the summary contains 204 words. Saved 60%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!

Local Asian massage parlor is like $150 plus tip for full service.

There are people so desperate for a fuck that they will pay this money. Will it solve the problem that the number of (real, existing) women on such platforms is lower than the demand? Probably not.

As someone who's never used it, what features are there that get paywalled? I have a very naïve idea about what it is like.

Last time I used it, things like seeing who liked your profile and super liking other profiles (normally you get limited number of those and they indicate that you're really interested), and seeing who viewed your profile.

One major issue is that Tinder is full of bots. The company doesn't sanitize it cuz it's in their interest to have men feel like there are more women on it than there actually are.

Well I'm glad I never got into it. Everything about that just feels icky.

Maybe I'm just old, but I like the idea of meeting in real life and progressing from there to be preferable rather than meeting because of an app. That puts the first real life encounter in a weird context, so I think it's so much more natural if you encounter them genuinely first and then get attracted to each other just a better system overall.

I mean I guess it can work out, but it just seems extremely uncomfortable all around.

It's sad that there are people lonely enough to pay for this.

This has to be a joke right? Right?

Why do I remember this exact thing existing in like 2016?

Because in 2016 it was a huge deal when they introduced a $5 monthly subscription for a few perks.

Now a $500 subscription triggers about the same level of response because we've all been worn down by subscription fatigue so much, so no one is really surprised, but we feel like we should still be really indignant and mad about this.

Subscription fatigue is real. Went to a PF Chang's yesterday and the host's desk had a sign inviting guests to sign up for their subscription to "preferred customer" service, something like $40 a month, to get 'priority seating' and drink specials. Screw that!

Well, that's as good of a reason as any to delete the app.

The most pathetic thing is that there are enough lonely dudes out there that some would actually consider this service.

So corporations were thinking why should women be the only ones who can extort a bunch of money from lonely dudes... why not us too?

For most people their choice of life partner is the most important career decision they will ever make. 500 bucks could be a smart investment if it improves the odds of hooking up with the right person.

are people seriously looking for life partners on tinder now?

Yes, because meeting people online is convenient, sometimes more realistic than meeting people irl, and sometimes it's the only viable option to meet people, and because tinder is used pretty much everywhere and by a lot of people, it's a better option than other dating sites/apps.

It's a fucking shit app to finding a life partner due to people leaving their bios empty, and a good number of people looking for short term fun, so finding a long term partner comes down to luck.

But for $500 a month you’ll have more luck.

Next year they’ll be introducing the whale tier which will be $1500 a month and they’ll guarantee you at least 37% more luck!

It won't though. Tinder can show their profile to more people but if those people still don't like it, they're not gonna match. For a lot of people, I have to imagine that seeing that someone paid $500 a month for a dating app is going to be a big red flag. I mean, it'll bring in gold diggers, but that's about it.
