Summer is the worst season of the year, isn't?

CYB3R@lemm.ee to Asklemmy@lemmy.ml – 169 points –

The sun sucks, being forced to shower like every 4 hours just to not feeling sweaty, the fucking mosquitoes, the fact you can't wear anything that you want anymore due the heat, the people outside... The fucking beach. I try to avoid it... The fucking sand, not a fan of it. Is scratchy, harsh, annoying and it infiltrates in every nook and cranny. Is not worth the annoyance just to shower yourself with salt water.

It depends om where you live. Sumner is not like what you write everywere. 🙂

Bingo. In Colorado it’s generally incredible. Low insect level, clear skies, great temps, and dry. We love it thank you very much.

Yep. Winter in Michigan is a long gray hell. The summers are beautiful though! It’s enough that by June you’ve forgiven yourself for moving to a place with winters like that, until it’s January again and you’re wishing for a single ray of sunshine.

Allergies by day, mosquitoes by night, heat during work, rain during leisure, it can get pretty bad. Autumn is awesome, it's nicer out with no forces of nature used against anyone and the festivities and aesthetics are amazing, but Spring and Summer make the wait challenging.

Hurricane season would like a word with you...

I thought Summer was hurricane season, hence the constant vacation warnings.

Hurricane season lasts from roughly June through November. The worst of it normally comes between August and October, so late summer and we'll into the fall.

June to November iirc, at least for the Atlantic

Situational on region.

I'd rather have any other season personally. You can bundle up in autumn and winter, spring is fine generally. Summer if it gets too hot you can only take off so many clothes before you either run out, or the police get called.

hard disagree. as a brit, i truly love the few genuine summer days we get

I'm a Brit and I strongly agree with OP. Summer gets too hot and sticky - often even on grey days. It's not been too bad this year so far, but there's still plenty to come...

I love summer. I love wearing shorts and t-shirts, swimming in the sea, being outside, and opening the doors like the garden is just another room in my house.

I hate summer, I dislike shorts and t-shirts being too much clothing for the scorching heat. I also don't like seeing our dried up husk of a garden despite best attempts to water the damn thing.

Best season, weather is nice enough so Ican enjoy outdoor activities.

There's no such thing as bad weather only inappropriate gear.

The problem is, in the summer, "appropriate gear" means an air conditioned house.

Yes you can play tennis in bubble jackets rifling through snow but it's not exactly pleasant, you can put skis on your skateboard but it ain't the same.

In Texas we have summer heat that even an air conditioned house can't keep up with at times. It can get hot enough that a some home AC systems will run and run and not maintain a comfortable temp.

Can confirm. Already happened yesterday. The hot temps are creeping in early this year and I’m still dealing with all the fallen trees from the storms last week. Steamy as heck outside.

Yeah you have to manage your expectations and also close the shades. But if you are coming in from the heat, the house will feel cool even if it's not cold. Usually with a heat pump (and older not so insulated house) we can comfortably get up to about 20f lower than outside, set it at 78 in summer and it works ok, still seems to manage the humidity inside too.

being forced to shower like every 3 hours just to not feeling sweaty

Bro do you live in the desert? Or are you obese? Both? This feels like a very local/personal experience lol. Far from everyone has these issues with summer.

Maybe it's all a joke and I'm whooshing hard but... Anyway.

Just sounds like Florida to me.

100% humidity all the time. Temperatures in the 100's (F) (>38C). Feels like the air is thick and heavy constantly. It'll rain just long enough every so often to keep these attributes true almost all the time. Doesn't matter how fit you are, just walking to your car is enough to make you feel like you just crawled out of the swamp. Worst of all, Florida doesn't get Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter; We get Summer, Simmer, Summer, Fall.

Yeah that sounds about right. I've lived two summers in south Florida and it was brutal. Summers here in northern Sweden are quite a lot milder, obviously. Very comfortable. But can also get very hot, as well.

So a very local thing indeed.

I'm guessing you've never been to a tropical place during summer. They're not exaggerating, any physical work you do within a couple of minutes you start sweating, it's hell.

A lot more of the USA is obese now than ever, and obesity and heat do not mix.

Indeed. I have a colleague who is obese. They tend to dress lighter waaay earlier in the year than the rest of us in the team. 😅

Offices having AC on when its 50 outside also sucks.

When you say 50, you mean C or F?

Fahrenheit, sorry should have clarified.

Offices having AC on when its 50[°F] outside also sucks.

That sucks for everyone, yeah.

Absolutely.
I can put on more clothes, but I can't strip my skin. I mean, with enough dedication I probably could...

You can't always put on more clothes. If your hands or face are cold you can't exactly walk around with a ski mask and bulky gloves on.

I mean, I suppose you could. It just wouldn't be as comfy and you might get some strange looks from other people here and there. XD

It doesn't work that way for me. I have been so cold that clothing didn't make me not cold. Even here where it rarely ever gets to freezing. Hot weather, I can slow down, sitting still in the shade with a breeze I can be comfortable from 90F to about 100F. Don't know about hotter, we haven't reached it yet.

I don't try to do work outside when it's that hot. If daytime event in the sun - hat or visor, long sleeved loose linen shirt and pants, and oddly enough, Merino wool thong and socks are often more comfortable than anything else.

Hot yoga is 90-103 so I guess I can also move in the heat without freaking out but they manage the humidity, it's different from outside. And I sweat a lot in those classes.

Any of these I prefer to being cold, cannot get warm. Maybe I need to talk to Wim Hof, but it seems better to be tolerant of heat, than cold.

Absolutely. Fall/Winter reign supreme, Spring is nice too.

Summer is my favorite part of the year in the US. Longer days, cool nights, lush greenery with beautiful skies, more activities to do outside, mangoes are in season, going to the pool, barbecues, basking in the sun and feeling the seasonal depression melt away.

I was born in the summer, maybe that has something to do with it.

Not a huge beach guy, but I live for the summer. 80F is the ideal temperature; anything up to 100 is great too, as long as I don't need to perform prolonged manual labor outside. Long sunny days make my lizard soul happy, and all of my best clothes are summer clothes.

I love heat, sun makes me more alive and energetic. Winter is the worst, i always has depression because of it.

I love cold, the bracing air makes me feel alive and energetic. Summer is the worst, I feel exhausted all the time from the humidity.

Am summer fae. Hard disagree. The worst part of summer is indoors where they abuse air conditioning to create a dry frigid wasteland.

And wildfire smoke which didn't use to be a thing where I live.

I'll take if over winter or the cold/rainy phases of the other two every day.

Couldn't agree more with all your points. I don't mind sunny days, but summer has been miserable these past few years, the heat makes me exhausted and letargic, thank God for AC. Winter on the other hand is bliss (at least where I live), mild temperatures, no bugs... I wish it would last forever.

Totally agree. During the winter the parks are empty, no little, no bugs, no noise, no sun screen. The only downside is the early darkness

Love summer. Love all the seasons, but would be nice if summer was one, two months longer and winter shorter.

Simply move to the southeast US, summer starts at the beginning of April and ends around Halloween

Here it used to be very nice every summer, but these days it is always unbearably hot and there's a 1/3 chance that there's smoke from forest fires and always heavy water and fire restrictions.

I love the spring and summer. I have fibromyalgia and the pain and fatigue is much better during the warmer months. I like the sunny weather as it cheers me up. The people outside make me feel like I'm on a holiday even when I'm not. It's the time of the year I feel the most motivated to do anything and I actually have the energy to do it.

Aside from that, the summer heat doesn't bother me that much. It's much better than the freezing cold for me. Unless it's almost 40°C, but I don't think anyone likes these high temperatures.

I agree with you about the mosquitoes, though.

It definitely is for me, with pretty much the same reasons as the ones you've listed. I spent most of the last two summers indoors, because the heat was just unbearable. My friends and I hung out in the evenings, when we could take short walks without discharging a small lake's worth of sweat. I can't wait for autumn to arrive.

Are you by any chance related to Anakin Skywalker ?

Seriously, summer here in Comoros corresponds to the rainy season and it's indeed a bit uncomfortable to traverse. 95% humidity, upwards of 35 degrees, frequent pouring rain. I change clothes at least twice a day, and I work from home ! At least we have water and nature is happy for it : forests are lush, dense, fruity. It's winter now, muuuch more bearable.

Summer is orders of magnitude less painful all around than winter. Fall, now, that is the absolute best time of year. Not too hot not too cold, nor too wet. Just purfick

Summer is when you don't feel depressed, so it seems like it's a good time of year.

Idk summers are pretty sweet! Only time of the year it's warm enough to wear anything nice. No need to worry about heating, and the beach is a nice place to just chill, the sand is nice and soft and the sun warms the skin in ways nothing else does, ice cold beers, nights warm enough to not wear a jacket, flowers blooming and bees buzzing around gardens filling them with life, loud music and partying around the clock!

For sweat I'd suggest deodorant and at least a shower every few days along with fresh clothing.

I feel like much how OP seems to experience extremely hot summers you get extremely mild ones

Italian 38 °C basically forty

Hot season is my least favorite, but I come to love the rainy season for being cooler & more dynamic even if it can sometimes be inconvenient

Depends on where you are.

I’m in the Midwestern United States now, where summer is often pretty frustrating due to the high humidity. But I’m originally from Phoenix, where I really enjoyed summer (in the shade), because I love the feeling of warmth soaking into my bones, and I never got sweaty.

Honestly, how it's been so far here this year, it's pretty much the perfect season. Temperature during the day between 18C and 25C. Warm in the sun, but with a cold wind. Cooler in the night, so I can sleep decently. And nice and sunny, with very long daylight. I always notice that I'm a lot happier when it's light outside, so I'm feeling a lot better in this weather. I do agree that the 30+ C days and 20+ C nights are hell, mostly because airco's aren't that common here

I live in Florida, so it's hot but I LOVE our summers. We get warm mornings, afternoon thunderstorms, and warm evenings with lightning all through the sky, it is so beautiful. I like also how nobody at the beach is modest or worried about looks (I'm not in Miami) so you see all types in swimsuits.

So summer is my favorite mostly because of the rain, but I do like the beach.

ETA I also like the longer days and shorter nights.

As someone who lives in Greece, 10 minutes from the beach, I actually agree with you. I never liked the Greek heat. I like the sea when there's not many people in it though.

I didn't like summers or winters where I used to live, so I moved to somewhere where I like both seasons. Then moved again to somewhere that I love all four seasons.

But I get what you're saying; you're describing the summers of my childhood. Hot and humid so you feel like you need a cold shower within 5 minutes of walking outside. Sticky by day, swarmed by mosquitos at night.

But you lost me at the sand bit. I love the beach and ocean when it's like 10-30°C out. Colder and hotter are okay, too, but not as nice.

Clearly whoever wrote this has not seen an oregon coast summer. But don't move here... It's terrible... I promise...

I'm Canadian in a place with a decent amount of snow and it's cold for like six months of the year. I love summer.

I do live near a popular cottage area so the downside to summer is all the asshole cottagers who tailgate aggressively if you aren't driving 30km/hr or more over the speed limit.

Summer is absolutely dogshit terrible. Anyone who claims they like it is lying to themselves. It's muggy, hot, humid, touristy, expensive. What is there to like?

I'm more bothered by the flying cockroaches. They are more active when its hot it seems. Spring and Autumn are best I feel.

Absolutely. By body runs hot, and Autumn is my favorite. All the gray of winter exacerbates my depression, and snow is a pita. In Autumn all the goddamn bugs die and the inevitably swampy Chicago humidity is a non-factor.

Completely agree. I hate heat with a passion. My 2 biggest annoyances are lawn mowers being loud and neighbors outside all day with kids that scream their fucking lungs out. Just high pitched fucking screaming for hours on end.

I know i used to play outside when i was little, but never did i yell and scream uncontrollably for fucking hours, driving anyone in a 200 meter radius fucking insane. Sorry i just don't get it.

Edit: im sorry if i sound like a boomer. Im autistic and the screaming is giving me a fight of flight reaction. Often i don't care. But a family 2 houses down screams sooooo loud. Not even laughing or anything. Just pure high pitched screaming. And they will go on until 10pm or so every day if the sun shines.

I use noise canceling earphones but i can't and don't want to wear those all day long.

Gift them a video game console. When I was young we must have drove all the neighbors nuts, running across their yards playing sports. My neighborhood now has kids but it's nice and quiet. Thank you Playstation and Xbox

I can barely afford rent :( I don't mind kids just playing etc. We have a big green field outside where kids play all day and its no problem. But there is a family a few houses down with kids that just scream. Not even laughing really. Just pure high pitched screaming. Fighting with eachother and screaming. And they will do that until 10-11pm in the weekends.

My autism just make the experience a 100x worse.

Hey man, it's your neighbor, I hate to tell you this but there isn't any kids in that house anymore the entire family perished in a fire a year ago. The whole block has been quiet since.

I don't mind the beach but please just give me autumn. Screw summer

Very early summer or late spring.
Just enough that you don't need a jacket in the morning/evening but not so hot that you will spontaneously combust during lunch.

I wonder what life was like before the summer sun actively tries to kill us.

Spring where I live is worst.

Lots of snow, lots of rain so that means a lot of slush, and any outdoor activity makes a mess of whatever you are wearing.

With the climate changes, we also get wild spikes of hot/cold weather. So one day you are in t-shirt and the next day you have a to wear a snow suit.

Spring is the worst. The weather is all over the place! One day you wear winter outfit and next day it’s tshirt and shorts but have an umbrella ready. Or a helmet for when it hails tennis balls.

Summer fans are not real, no way you guys enjoy a billion fuckin degree weather and sunburns that turn you to leather or the absolute swamp in your pants from being outside for more than 2 minutes.

That depends on your body though. I never get sunburns and while 30C is warm but comfortable, anything under 5C is actually painful. So I don't get winter fans either.

The thing is, in the winter you can just keep layering. But in summer, you can only remove so many layers before you have to rip your skin off to remove another one. Also I should mention that I'm in California where we get +35C summers and winter is 15C. BUT PEOPLE HERE STILL SAY SHIT LIKE "Can't wait for the warm weather! 😁" THE FUCK YOU MEAN "WARM" THIS SHITS ACTUAL HELL

I wouldn't call that hell either tbh but if your winter is 15C there isn't much excuse to wait for summer.

Go outside in 40°C weather for a bit, come back inside, sit in front of air conditioner, be just fine in a couple of minutes

Go outside in even 10°C weather for a second, come back inside, freezing to death even in front of a heater for an hour because cold or even very cool weather chills me to the bone and it takes forever for me to get warm again

Yeah, I prefer summer.

Yeah, no.

You can almost always add more layers, so unless we're talking about literally Siberia in winter, you should be fine.

But if it's too warm for shorts and shirt, there's nothing I can do. I can't run around naked or remove my skin (not in an easily reversible manner at least).

I agree that summer is the worst, but it's a regional thing. Also you don't have to go to the beach or in the water. I avoid the beach like the plague. Mostly because the water is plagued.

As someone who lives in a subtropical climate region, I completely agree

Yes, it's so awful. In the winter if you're cold you can just put on a coat but in the summer if you're hot there's nothing you can do about it. Also it's still light really late which I hate and it's just overall a miserable season. It's one of the biggest reasons I would like to move somewhere other than where I live now
