What was the best "worst. movie. ever"?

Sean@lemmy.thesanewriter.com to Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world – 70 points –

I'm talking about that movie you saw that was so bad it was good.

103

The Room.

I don't know if there is anything to discuss there.

The are a few art house theaters in my city that will do showings of The Room in the same style as like a Rocky Horror showing. People will yell and scream and generally make of the movie in a fun and jovial way. I've always wanted to check it out.

"You're tearing me apart, Lisa!!!"

Iron Sky. Nazi's left earth at the end of WW2 and made a base one the darkside of the moon. Sequel has dinosaurs...

Sequel has Nazi dinosaurs in the center of the earth*

Johnny mnemonic is a camp masterpiece

Keanu Reeves, Dolph Lundgren, Ice-T, Henry Rollins....it had a hard time not being awesome despite the writing.

The Core

Finally something in this thread that I've seen (and is actually a bad movie). The "science" of this movie is hilariously inaccurate and the movie is kinda over the top. But it's a lot of fun!

I really loved "My Name is Bruce". That's the thing that popped up in my mind.

Ever notice that this movie is basically the same story as The Three Amigos?

Cannibal: The Musical.

It's a reeeally early Trey Parker and Matt Stone creation. A live action comedy musical movie about the Donner party. Definitely a classic.

Not sure it fits “so bad it’s good.” The jokes the movie wants you to laugh at are the jokes you laugh at, so it is an effective comedy.

There are jokes you probably missed too. For example Trey bole up with his girl friend the week before making the movie, so they named the horse after her.

When they wake up in the Indian village and they are practicing karate. They didn't have any native Americans in their film school but had plenty of asain students.

Nope, knew about both of those. Another joke is the natives are speaking Japanese, not Comanche, and the teepees are the Japanese flag. Which is why the natives keep assuring everyone that they are, in fact, Indians.

The really awkward trapper song followed by them arguing about what key it was supposed to be in had me absolutely dying.

Better Off Dead.

An early John Cusack film by Savage Steve Holland co-creator of Eek! The Cat. How many montages can you fit in one movie?

Aww man, I love this movie! I'm also a fan of the Holland's other John Cusak film - One Crazy Summer.

It's not quite as good (or so fond of surreal moments), but I still enjoy it.

Agreed, One Crazy Summer is not quite as good. But it's available to stream on YouTube and will scratch the itch a bit :)

Pacific Rim

Makes no sense in ANY way but boy is it fun to watch. Some YouTube thingy called it the worst best and best worst movie ever, so...

I wouldn't call this a bad movie though? GDT directed movie with decent reviews (72% RT and 65 Metacritic).

Unless you're referring to the sequel (haven't watched).

Crank with Jason Statham. Ridiculous but fun.

Armageddon is something I watch far too often. It's not good but it's very entertaining.

While it was certainly entertaining, I was always more of a Deep Impact fan myself.

I thought it was weird that two movies about a comet hitting earth came out within a year of each other.

It's very nostalgic to me, I remember watching it a ton as kid on VHS. It's not GOOD but I think of it fondly

1 more...

Idiocracy was a great movie when it was satire, alas it's now at best a documentary (at worst a 'what could have been if things were good' movie) Reality caught up and beat it, alas.

Have you watched it recently? Doesn't hold up in my opinion

Watching it right now, I think it holds up ok

Nah, with how it goes in the world it's more a horror movie now instead of comedy.

It is almost as if humanity decided to see the movie as a challenge instead of a warning (or just plain entertainment, what it was meant to be).

Troll 2. So many quotable lines and unforgettable scenes. And you don't even have to watch Troll 1, because there is no Troll 1 - at least not in relation to, or in the context of, this film.

I absolutely love Troll 1 for the simple fact that the main character was named Harry Potter and he asks a witch to teach him to be a wizard halfway through the movie. It came out 11 years before the Harry Potter books.

There are also no actual trolls in the movie, only goblins. Legendary film.

Ninja Terminator

I believe these films were made from footage of failed East Asian productions that were bought up and then "finished" by an American company cheap. (The director Godfrey Ho is known to do this apparently.)

There are quite a few Richard Harrison films like this.

Well, I'm convinced from that preview. Looks like the full movie is on youtube. Will have to check it out!

I'd nominate Birdemic. You have to be in a mood to laugh at how bad it is.

Jfc... They made three of these? LMAO

🤣🤣🤣 oh noooo

To be fair, we probably contributed to #2&3, our fam actually rented it since you could not find a free stream of it back then!!!

The Love Guru

Everyone I know hates it, but I am a big Mike Myers fan.

Saw this for the first time a month ago and I made me really really miss the old Mike Meyers stuff. I'll watch it again now because you made me want to.

It's a crime no one has mentioned Neil Breen yet. I just came back from a showing of his latest film at an indie cinema. The whole place was so roudy and screaming at the film. I've never lost my voice watching a movie before 10/10.

In a very different way to most of the answers on here so far:

A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence.

It's simultaneously excruciatingly dull and mindbendingly interesting. A genuinely fascinating film, but requires a huge amount of focus and commitment from the viewer. Possibly my favourite film ever

Cannibal women in the avacado jungle of death. Rowdy Roddy Piper, hot chicks and Bill Mayher.

Kung Pow is way more enjoyable than it has any right to be.

The award has to go to big trouble in little china it's incredible!

Yeah, no. That's a straight up great film.

7.2/10 on IMDB and 74% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Victor Wong and James Hong having what looks like a riot of a time too.

Sure, it was never going to win an Oscar, but that's probably a fault with the Oscars, not with BTILC.

Big trouble in little tokyo is much... much.... much worse, in the blurst ways.

Slipstream (1989).. check it out if you haven't seen it. Mark Hamill, Bill Paxton and produced by Gary Kurtz (Star Wars, ESB, American Graffiti, The Dark Crystal).. This was released 5 years after Return of the Jedi with that star power and didn't even get a US cinema release.

Anything directed by Uwe Boll but especially Bloodrayne. It was so bad the actors stopped recording the commentary to get up and go get more wine to finish.

The happening really holds up as one of the greatest bad movies.

It depends on what you were expecting. If you went expecting a serious thriller, then it sucks.

But I knew what I was in for, and completely lost it when (SPOILERS!) vvvv

Marky Mark talks to the potted plant.

It's got to be either Tank Girl or Frankenhooker for me.

It's easy to find BAD movies, but for "Best Worst", aka, "So Bad It's Good" category there should be some really redeeming qualities that make it interesting, entertaining, quotable, or just plain fun.

Tank Girl is a mess, with Ice (I'll do anything to be a movie star and get out of rap) T as a kangaroo-guy, early Naomi Watts as eye candy Jet Girl and smart-aleck Lori Petty leading the pack as Tank Girl. Weird as all hell but some absolutely hilarious dialog ("I had a swell time, but the swelling's gone down..") and it's fun to catch those building their acting careers - not just Ice T and Naomi, but Doug Jones, Iggy Pop, James Hong, Richard Schiff, etc..

Frankenhooker is possibly the better film but super-tongue-in-cheek fun, loaded with with it's-so-dumb-snort! dialog like "Errrrkkk! Hey - Wanna date?" and "Oh, God...She's gonna blow! Duck and cover!", of course plenty of 1980s bewbs for the less-discerning amongst us.

Both highly recommended...in fact, the higher you are, the better they are. ;)

How could you not point out Malcolm McDowell being his Malcom McDowell-ist in tank girl

That's like mentioning the 2000s Dungeons and Dragons movie and not mentioning Jeremy Irons

Or mentioning the 1993 Super Mario Bros movie and not bringing up the goombas

.... Which also fall in this category

Yep - forgot to mention him; was in a different flow.

But also consider a wide-eyed, deep voiced Eddie Redmayne in Jupiter Ascending.. another hoot of a movie. (“I like dogs…”)

Without a doubt, for me it's Re-animator. This movie also introduced me to HP Lovecraft.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon, I love this movie for some reason. I actually enjoy Shia in this role, the action/ special effects are great, and the score from Steve Jablonsky is one of the best I've heard in a blockbuster (yeah I said it). Great voice acting as well with Leanord Nimoy joining in. It also felt like a true ending to a trilogy.

Shark Attack 3: Megalodon

That one used to be my favourite cause John Barrowman is in it.

Now I'm afraid of the water cause of my shark movie binge, and John Barrowman is a pervert who got dropped by everyone.

That film has the best line ever, though. John said it was an ad-lib where he was trying to make Jenny McShane laugh.

Ninja Squad.

The directors made a bunch of movies using the same technique: buy footage from unfinished Asian action movies. Splice them with footage of European martial artists sparring in the most bizarrely colourful outfits and Ninja! headbands. Dub in ridiculous dialogue about a vague revenge plot.

Don't play any drinking games with this movie. You'll die of alcohol poisoning before the third act.

Plan 9 From Outer Space has been long considered the best worst movie. Directed by Ed Wood it starred Bela Lougosi who died during filming and was replaced by his accountant IIRC who covered his face for the duration. It also features Vampira the original scream queen B-movie host.

The Bermuda Triangle, Hillbillies in a Haunted House, and She Devils On Wheels are some of my personal favorites. If schlock is your thing definitely check out Tubi. It's a free streaming service that is a bottomless pit of older bad films, documentaries on bad films and whole movies of nothing but trailers of old films. I'm obsessed!

The English dub of the kung fu movie Shaolin V. Ninja. Voices are wildly inconsistent, plot makes no sense. A great time. Pretty sure it’s on YouTube. At least it was some years ago.

I love dumb and clichet action movie.
For that I'm gonna pick Skin Trade

ANY modern Stevel Seagal stuff imho

His classic 90s movies hit different knowing the man he'd become. There's more evidence of lazy choreography and bullshido than I noticed when I was a kid.

You got to watch All Star Superman on HBO Max. It is honestly the most insane and stupid superhero thing ever made and every moment is more crazy than the last. It is a 10 out of 10 laugh riot while high. I want to give some examples but I also don't want to spoil this for anyone who hasn't seen it.

Christmas Coupon. It's so fucked you can't take your eyes off it.
