What app is everyone using for Lemmy

Dusk@lemmy.world to Fediverse@lemmy.world – 195 points –

I’m currently using Memmy and it’s giving me Apollo vibes but I’m open to testing out other apps ^^

196

wefwef and Liftoff until Sync arrives.

I keep switching apps all the time. Right now, I'm trying out Wefwef vs Thunder. They are very similar and I really like both. However, I think I slightly prefer Thunder. It feels a little bit more fluent to me, as it is a native app and it comes with a few more options, like being able to put the thumbnail on the right. I really like that because now I can open pictures without opening the comments. It also does a few things a little bit more sensible in my opinion, esspecially the back button. For instance, in Thunder the back button does what I expect it to do. But in Wefwef It is a bit buggy as it often goes back on the background, without closing a full screen image first. The theming also feels a but more at home on Android, while still being very similar.

Both are great options though and both have it's pro's and cons. I'm also trying out Pulse for Squabbles (so not Lemmy), which is also very neat and very similar. Makes the experiences a bit more consistent.

I'm also waiting for both Sync and Boost. I'm really curious in how both of those Ferdiverse versions turn out.

Jerboa

Same. I was using liftoff for a bit while they worked out the kinks during the 0.18 upgrade, but its been great, feels really intuitive to me.

Im coming from reddit via RiF, and I feel like Jerboa checks a lot of the same boxes for me.

Yeah Jerboa was rough for a bit there but it's been working really well for the past few days.

I love Jerboa but is there any way to make the images in people's comments (not original posts) larger?

Wefwef right now. I have been pretty pleased with it. Not sure who the the developer it but damn they’ve been rolling out updates daily. Sometimes multiple times a day. I don’t think the person is sleeping at this point.

It’s open source and there’s a ton of open PRs. Lots of people want Apollo back.

I am currently using Jerboa.

Started with it, tried every other app, came back to Jerboa.

Liftoff is another app that is very functional. But I don't like the design and don't size of the comment section can't be changed for now.

WefWef app on Android. It's been pretty great and seeing it get updates every day with new improvements is nice.

I switched back to Android right before Apollo came out so I never had experience with that. This is supposedly just like it with fewer features. Even so, I can see why people loved Apollo so much if it resembled WefWef even slightly.

Using wefwef.app (it’s a web app) and it’s great. Sometimes I need remind myself that I’m not using Apollo.

Not gonna lie, I don't know what kind of dark magic wefwef pulled through, but it is the first web app I actually find as performant a a native app. It may not be for me (not a big fan of iphone aesthetics), but it is wonderful.

Have to agree with this guy.

I recently swapped from IPhone to Android and thought I'd lost the slickness of Apollo forever.

Then Wefwef came along. It's nowhere near as smooth as the original Apollo app (at least via Android's Firefox browser), but it's got all the same vibes and makes me feel like I'm back in that same experience again.

Me: "I wonder if this Connect could be better than what I'm using"

Also me: Already using Connect

Connect is easily the most feature-complete app I've found for Android at the moment, loving it here too

And the dev is rolling out features at a crazy pace. It feels like everytime I open the app it's gotten significantly better

My only complaint with Connect is that I'm using the dark theme, and so having a big white "refreshed" bar show up when I pull down my feed is jarring. I like jerboa's cute spinny wheel better.

But, if that's my biggest complaint ¯\(ツ)

Wefwef. It's incredibly polished and fast, especially for a webapp. It runs circles around new reddit performance wise, even with the servers being a raspi trampled by a horde of reddit refugees

I have a lot but I use none. I mainly use the web version, also on mobile.

Same, everyone here chasing after the perfect app, but I find the mobile web interface to be pretty damn incredible.

Well, it makes sense; most of the new Lemmy crowd hopped on after the Reddit 3PA disaster.

Heh, you didn't witness the old web UI that used sockets. It was nigh unusable on popular servers.

I definitely did witness that myself, but that only happened when browsing All for me. Thank God that bug was fixed in 0.18.

I'm using Liftoff right now. It's got great features, and it's very stable.

Same, but I might switch to Boost for lemmy when it's out.

Yeah that's, what I'm going to switch to, was using wefwef, then connect but it kidna buggy tbh. I used boost briefly for reddit and enjoyed it.

Memmy, Mlem, wefwef are all inspired by Apollo. All are good. Liftoff! is another one I am testing, not crazy about the design but it’s still decent.

None have been published to the App Store yet, right? All just in test flight I believe. Just trying to confirm that because I can’t find them the normal way.

Wefwef is a web app, the others are in TestFlight. Although I read Memmy was getting close to App Store release.

Memmy is now in the App Store but you’re probably better off signing up through test flight so you can get the almost daily updates.

Wefwef is a web app. Goto wefwef.app and add to homescreen.

https://wefwef.app on iOS.

It's nearly EXACTLY like Apollo. Installed on my Home Screen and put where the Apollo icon was. (Apollo moved to a special folder to commemorate its memory.) You guys, I've got to be honest, I didn't think Lemmy was going to work out for me, but with wefwef, I don't feel like I'm missing a beat. Looking forward to Lemmy and the fediverse continuing to grow!

Placing the Jerboa icon where I used to have the Boost was so nice. I'm still waiting to see when kbin gets an app. The mobile experience is rough.

I see a lot of kbin posts on here. I think I’m good.

I have Memmy, Liftoff, Mlem and wefwef. Like the interfaces of Mlem and wefwef the best so far. One app doesn’t have it all yet and if there’s a hang up with one I can try another!

I’m giving wefwef a go since there seems to be more notification options, messages and such available than that of memmy

I think it's okay to keep discussing this because the app situation is very much in flux at the moment. I'm on Jerboa because it's the best native app I've found that plays nice with a folding phone and Samsung DeX. My requirements are simple, but they are niche. I'm keeping an eye on a few other apps though because while Jerboa is great as it is there are improvements to be found.

Wefwef but I'll be using sync once it's available

Jerboa has been wonderful lately.

It could use some UI/UX work though. For example, if I want to go to a comment I replied to from my profile, rif had a handy button to show my comment with context. On Jerboa I need to go to my comment with a couple unintuitive taps, then the context of that comment with another button that doesn't really feel like it's in the right place.

I'll give it time to develop though

Connect for lemmy has a pretty nice clean look that can be customized to look a lot like RIF. Been enjoying it so far.

Jerboa for now just waiting for boost to release on lemmy and then i will move.

I started with Jerboa but moved to Connect. Not as many issues as far as I can tell from the few days I've used both.

Saw your comment and moved from Jerboa to Connect. Loading is so much faster, but I do miss the body text preview square Jerboa has. I can only preview it on Connect using fullwidth I think, which takes up too much real estate per post.

Overall, still a huge improvement.

Here are the apps I've used for Lemmy on Android!

  • Liftoff - my current app of choice. It's very fast, supports the gestures I need, and while it lacks a bit in appearance customization, it makes up for it in speed and features.
  • Connect - I originally wrote it off due to the inability to disable swipe gestures, though I tried to switch back to it after that feature was added. It's now a very pleasant experience, with a lot of customization! The only downside is that it is slower than Liftoff at the moment.
  • Jerboa - decent, but buggy and a bit slow.
  • Lemmotif - no features, no logins, no customization, no posting, no nothing; just pure, blazingly fast, Lemmy doomscrolling. I love it.

I've tried: Connect, Jerboa, Liftoff, Thunder, Summit, and Wefwef.

For now, I've settled on Liftoff, though I do keep Jerboa installed as well.

Edit: ah, you're on iOS. In which case, I got nuttin.

Jerboa for me, too. Mostly because it was the first thing that came up on the app store for me, and there isn't a Lemmy is Fun (...yet?). So I tried Jerboa and it's perfectly capable.

Memmy! It does what I need it to do

Memmy is crazy good and it seems like it’s getting updated literally every day with fantastic new stuff

Liftoff is my favourite so far, but every time I use it I get the theme song from the old Australian kids show of the same name stuck in my head and it drives me insane.

I used Boost for a couple of years and will almost certainly be switching back to it as soon as it's available, it's set to download immediately from the play store when it releases.

There isn't much choice - F-Droid only contains Jerboa (not counting abandoned and broken Lemmur).

Yeah I'm not about to switch to the fediverse and not use fully open source apps. I install almost nothing from the Google play store. There's no need to use Google play services to make a lemmy app.

Liftoff is open source. You can grab an APK right from GitHub for build it yourself.

Liftoff and Thunder are both available right now via F-Droid if you add the IzzyOnDroid repo. I'm using Liftoff and I like it.

Cool. I might have to check that out! I just searched for lemmy in fdroid and didn't see it but that could just be fdroid's search or missing tags or something.

Oh, they're not in the official F-Droid repo yet, but they are in the IzzyOnDroid repo, which you can add as a source.

WefWef works great as a web app. Just open wefwef.app in your browser and click install in browser context menu.

Is it read only, or do you have to trust your credentials to third party service?

I believe they don't store any credentials on the server. If you really don't trust them you can also host your own instance. You can read more here

Liftoff. I also tried Jerboa and Connect, but Liftoff just has the best look and feel. Having said that, as an old Boost for Reddit user I'll be switching to Boost for Lemmy as soon as it releases.

I use liftoff and it is a good enough experience. It keeps getting more polished which is nice.

Memmy, and occasionally WefWef if I need to check on any odd behavior in Memmy.

If both are acting odd I web version it to confirm, then file a report.

Happy testing both liftoff and connect

Using Connect too, surprised I don't hear more about it. It's not perfect, but it's pretty solid

I am using Liftoff right now. And it works for me

Wefwef while waiting for sync and boost; might actually keep using wefwef though if it keeps improving at this rate. Let's see.

Using the website as PWA right now, the layout works well for me and there's no bugs to speak of

I really like Jerboa, has everything I need and Jeboas are so cute!

Using Jerboa right now. It's mostly good. I'm just unsure if the search function is returning all communities.. but maybe that's not possible? Still learning the details of the fediverse lol

Jerboa for the most part. Allows me a couple of accounts and lets me keep them separate.

Liftoff is pretty decent too, except the both accounts sort of merge and show up in a single feed.

Really cannot wait for Boost. Seriously, so psyched!

In liftoff, you can tap the title in the middle and select the instance you want to see

Liftoff. Simple yet elegant. I wish there was an app closer to baconreader. I used BR for 12 years, so I grew very accustomed to it.

I keep jumping between wefwef and liftoff.

With time they are all going to improve and have the things we all want, then I guess it will just be down to taste

Liftoff is great so far. Used Jebora, but it was having some connectivity issues and the comment structure was a little hard to differentiate. Liftoff is really nice and notifies you when you lose connection to the server. Never had an iPhone so didn't use apollo unfortunately because I heard great things. I did hear that the Boost team are releasing a new app soon which boost was IMO the best one I ever used

Memmy (iOS) reminds me of Apollo, feel right at home. I don't even miss Reddit at this point.

Now that the app is working a much better, I’m excited to see what further development will look like.

The .world server improvements have helped a ton

I'd like to know what I am doing wrong when trying to log-in. I can't be the only person having issues.

I have this account (Hazdaz) and I've tried logging into wefwef, Connect and Jerboa. On ALL three apps on my Samsung S21FE I get an error message that my credentials/password isn't correct. I've used my PC and reset the password. Changed at least 2 times now and tried again logging into these 3 Android apps and the error is the same. What can I possibly be doing wrong? The only way I can access Lemmy is on a computer. I've asked about this a few days ago and some helpful people replied but nothing they suggested worked.

How can this be so difficult?

When it asks for username type email instead the username does not seem to be valid when signing in I have found.

I have tried username, I have tried email. I have tried all lowercase username. I have tried all uppercase username.

I have tried every imaginable combination and I feel I am missing something obvious. Do I have to enable access from my desktop to allow a mobile app to also log in? Makes no sense, but I'm running out of possible issues.

Make sure you are selecting the instance holding your account. Eg: if you signed up on "lemmy.world", then in your mobile app > in the log in page select "lemmy.world" then enter your creds and log in.

Here is a screenshot from "jerboa"

I have gone to that screen a million times now. I have tried lemmy.world and lemmy.ml (even though I am pretty sure it is .world). I have used "Hazdaz" "hazdaz" and "HAZDAZ" and I've triple checked my password. I've done this over and over and I always get "incorrect log-in" or something like that.

I don't know what else to do.

Lemmy.world is going through maintenance right now. I think it mostly finished yesterday though. Could have had something to do with it.

But every time I try to log in there is maintenance?! I just don't get it. I've tried maybe 2 dozen times over the last week on multiple apps on multiple devices and same issue. I've reset my password multiple times. I've double, triple and quadruple checked the password I type in.

Is there a way for more than 2 people to have the same username?? That makes zero sense, but so does not being able to log-in on a mobile device and yet I can post this fine on my desktop.

Might want to see if you can contact the devs for .world. They might be able to help you, it's a strange issue you're having.

might be wrong instance? nail down the instance/capitalization of the account. change password to no special characters.. verify on desktop first.

I JUST changed my password again. No special characters. Logged off my desktop, logged back in. No issues. Then tried it with Jerboa and no luck. I don't know what I can possibly be doing wrong.

Jerboa was recommended first and it's available on fdroid, haven't had the need to switch from it yet.

Currently liftoff, though I still have jerboa installed for some things.

I mostly navigate it from my laptop, but in the cases where I use my phone, Jerboa is still my go-to

Buggy at times, but I like the UI. Definitely open to new apps though. Connect didn't feel like my type, but I might try out

Boost once it's done, since a friend of mine recommended it for Reddit.

Memmy. It even had a full release on the App store a couple of hours ago, so no need for testflight anymore. There are updates almost daily and it gets better and better.

Oh that’s great to hear, I was used to refreshing TestFlight and seeing what had been changed

I am trying memmy and wefwef; so far I prefer wefwef as I find the memmy light theme to be too light - fonts are too washed out. Don’t like dark themes at all. I wish wefwef would show the current date and time though.

I have lurked on Reddit for many years, using Apollo, but never had an account. It seems that memmy does not let you browse communities without creating an account, so here I am. What I have seen so far of lemmy, it appears a lot friendlier than Reddit. This may induce me to actually contribute in future.

All of them rig now.

So far really liking wefwef, but connect and liftoff are really good as well.

The app ecosystem will be changing a lot in the next couple months so I will keep testing whatever keeps coming out.

Chrome. Waiting for Boost for lemmy to be released.

This has been asked dozens of times in the past days and weeks. I wish people would use the search function.

Long term I hope we move a part of this to the wiki. https://joinfediverse.wiki/What_is_Lemmy%3F

To still provide something helpful for the current thread: https://lemmyapps.netlify.app/

This is a developing situation and these apps are being updated sometimes multiple times a day. Looking up threads from even a few days ago, you might miss a game changing new feature. Let’s not discourage engagement here.

True and legit. My intention was not to discourage engagement. The other side also exists. Not everyone is interested in weekly updates about app developments. Repeated content and uninteresting content is another way to discourage engagement. There are better places for these topics, such as

The post as it stands is very low effort and quality.

"I’m currently using Memmy and it’s giving me Apollo vibes but I’m open to testing out other apps ^^"

This can easily be answered by using the search function, or simply by trying out another app. Others already talk about the same topic every day.

Firefox. My initial experience with Jerboa wasn't great but it is improving.

Mostly Jerboa, but also Thunder and LiftOff. All of them function nicely.

Any love for Thunder here?

Thunder is the best so far IMO. It has so many features, runs smoothly, has a great search function. One of the only things I think it needs more of is theming.

Edit: came back because since this comment I've been using Connect and haven't looked back. !Lemmyconnect@lemmy.ca if you want to check it out. Amazing app.

I'm on iOS and I'm using Mlem. It seems to be changing and shifting rapidly. Already changed noticeably 3 or so times within three to five weeks. Imagine if Reddit app fixed three to five of the bugs that most annoyed me that quickly...

I'm liking the initial beta version of Artemis quite a bit.

Kbin + kbin enhancement script + ublock through a Kiwi Browser "app" install. I tried all the Lemmy specific apps, including wefwef, and couldn't stand any of them. Some were completely borked because beehaw was still on .17, others were incredibly buggy or they had very weird layout & design choices that made the usability experience just too weird.

As a kbin user do these apps work for that or not? I chose kbin because i prefer the web UX.

Kbin doesn't have an API yet so the apps in development for it are scraping thier own. Artemis is looking incredibly promising and the dev is great.

I've been using a firefox shortcut for Kbin and it's been working great though in the meantime (mobile).

I've tried using the firefox shortcut on my phone, and it's less than great (imho). I can't type replies, it goes all janky, freezes up, won't go back to the home page, etc. Virtually unuseable.

Ok this works well for me. Easy to read and navigate. Perhaps try again, maybe they fixed it.

What device are you using? Perhaps its something with my google device not wanting me to use firefox.

Working fine for me. Galaxy S23+, latest Firefox release.

I use a zFold 4. Very well could be device. Haven't had any freezing or comment errors. My only issue has been the infinite scroll resetting after a post/comment so you are back at top.

I use kbin as well. As you stated, the interface is appealing.
I just migrated to the Lemmyverse so I'm trying new stuff out but so far, kbin is for me.

Tried lemmy and hated all that whitespace, kinda reminded me why I dislike normal reddit and always used old.reddit instead. So yeah, im a kbiner :)

You can browse in dark mode. It is available in the settings. Some instances allow for compact dark mode as well.

I went from never using Lemmy to using it so much more just from that simple change.

When i say whitespace i just mean the generic amount of empty space not the opposite of dark mode :)

I tried it, i fiddled with options but kbin just feels better for me and is easier to fit for me as a reddit replacement than the others. Lemmy is def a 2nd choice though, the rest are all awful.

The web ui is solid, but still patiently waiting for the Artemis app. Looks like it’s shaping up nice.

Used Connect but switched to mobile browser. Lemmy behave way less buggy and way more stable, while UI and functionality are just fine. Will try Sync when it comes to beta though.

I'm on iOS. I've tried Liftoff!, Mlem and Thunder. So far I like Mlem the most.

I have never used Boost for Reddit, but I'm still excited to see what Boost for Lemmy will be like.

I'm using Thunder. It's working well except maybe for the facts that upvoting takes forever and I keep getting 502 errors all the time, but I'm unsure whether that's Thunder's fault or it's just because my is instance is lemmy.world lol

I've been using a bunch. I've tried liftoff, Jerboa, the official PWA and wefwef. So far, I'm liking the vibes I'm getting from liftoff.

I'm with Liftfoff, until Beyond reaches its usable stage (RIP Infinity).

Between Jerboa and Connect atm. Prefer the look of Jerboa but it definitely is buggier. All of a sudden it wouldn't let me subscribe to communities so spending more time on Connect. Have signed up for boost though do will check that once it's released.

Was using wefwef but could not get over the PWA feel, now using Mlem and loving it!

Memmy ftw. But also, developing my own app for macOS right now :)
