We actually made Lemmy World Silver a few months ago.

That looks like it took more effort than the other one, which is antithetical to the intent of reddit Lemmy Silver

Ahem. I am not a fan of encouraging people to post giant low-content images in Lemmy threads. It is really nice to have a mostly textual medium, and inserting huge Pikachus or Picards or Frys into it is not an improvement to this user experience. Many of the images in this thread appear at around ⅓ of screen height in the default browser UI, and they have very little new to say.

If this sort of feature has to exist, please consider limiting it to rather small images, more in the "icon" range than the "memegens" range.

I just assumed these would be, you know, emoji-sized emojis.

I'm just going by what shows up in the thread here.

Good practice would be to globally limit the max-width of an emoji to something like 100px anyway. When clicked, the full image opens.

These are embedded images they are larger.

I think hexbear emojis are small on their instance but they are gigantic on every other instance. That might be the case here too. As a non world member I don't wish to see giant images.

Image and gif comments tend to get inordinate amounts of upvotes too and push actual quality comments down.

agree, if they implement this, I will just set a ublock rule so I never have to see it.

Can we turn them off? I'm almost 40 and really couldn't give a flying fuck about emoji spam. I'm already about to ditch Voyager for putting emoji's on my app interface.

The last thing I think lemmy needs is another way for belligerent idiots to say something without saying anything. They do enough of that with words.

A quick emoji can easily shift tone of text or be in place of a text action. But in general, one of my internet rules is; the more someone uses emojis, the dumber they are. Whether that be taking all the additional time to make themselves unintelligible, or trail their comment with two, three, or nineteen emojis, half of which are rofl faces 🤣🤣🤣👍👍🙏🤪🫳🎤✌️🚪

Emojis are a good way to try and mitigate the ubiquitous assumption of context that happens on text based forums.

Which is to say they've got a little upwards curve in indicating intelligence at the beginning prior to the plummet into dumpster fire territory you're associating them with... and I don't actually disagree with that, just a friendly addendum ;)

If so, it is actually a good QoL feature, and it can be disabled under Settings -> General.

What emoji in the Vgr interface are you talking about? I don't see them...

They added a new user badge with a baby face and how many days they have been active under x amount of days to every post by one of those flagged users. Also I'm using android native not web interface.

They're just modern colorized hieroglyphics, no big deal to me.

This is giving me ideas for community-centric emotes.

Oh, I would definitely pay for Lemmy premium to have that. Maybe like $30 a yea but still.

Addendum: a few questions.

  • When are the winning emotes announced?
  • How many can be selected?
  • How will we use them? (Maybe, like, :disappointed: or :lemmysilver: ?)

I would throw a fake "image not found" one in just to fuck with people.

We've got quite a few artsy types here - if we provide some parameters, I'm sure we could get some custom Lemmy emojis whipped up like overnight.

I am all on that. I do know one parameter is not to much details, as you need to be able to see it in quite small scales.

I will happily sketch any suggestions that are within my ability.

They’re not appearing on Bean or Safari either - at least not in comments. Maybe they only work on posts right now?

They work on the website and are probably not supported by all apps. But Safari should work fine.

There's also an issue in Lemmy currently with custom emoji's. I see there's a problem report on github that was closed, so I hope it will be solved in v0.19 which should be right around the corner.

I'm using liftoff app. I see your emoji. I see new emojis in some comments but not others (roughly 80% success rate). The comment you originally replied to in this thread (two comments up I think) has popcorn and facepalm shown as emojis (the facepalm is not Picard though...it's apple/google/etc.), the rest are text.

No one cares, people can just put images in comments, that's all custom emojis are anyways, just images in comments.
