I'm all for shitting on Xitter, but this is a pretty bad article. It's written like somebody put it through Google Translate a few times, and doesn't cite any sources for any of its claims. Closest I could find was this Business Insider story on a report by Apptopia, which only says that its downloads in various app stores declined 30%, not its overall userbase.

Un-fact checked, poorly seemingly AI written, citing no sources? So you're saying it's perfect for Twitter?

I haven't had the chance to look up the data myself, but if downloads did decline in a way that's unprecedented its a strong loss leader. To be really interesting though you'd have to couple it with other metrics.

Edit: There are people implying they work or worked at Twitter. They didn't.

Declining downloads simply means a slowing of growth, whereas this is claiming a user decline. That only shows up in traffic logs, transit commits, or CDN account usage data.

Not necessarily.

Every time someone buys a new device they have to reinstall the app. So declining downloads could be indicitive of less users.

Yeah and also, in capitalism, if a company ceases to grow, there's a good chance it will vaporize soon after. It's not a causation, but it's a notable correlation.

Yup! There are people out there with big pockets watching for stats much subtler than this. It doesn't always mean much taken on its own, but as a whole can paint an interesting picture.

whole can paint an interesting picture.

I know there’s meant to be a comma after ‘whole’. But I just pictured someone dumping a whole can of paint on a canvas and yelling “time!” Before walking over and slapping it on an easel at an auction and selling it for millions, while still dripping.

Phone replacement is a high seasonality situation. CDN usage and access logs will absolutely show whether usage has declined or not. Release an iPhone and you see a major spike in new downloads, otherwise it's probably all pretty much background noise.

My guess is everything involving Twitter has been on a decline, and the things I did know I'm not able to share.

You mean I got my pitchfork out for nothing?

Guess I’ll put it away…

I was thinking the same thing. I couldn't figure out if it was AI or translated (or both).

Imagine paying 40 billion for it too. The moron is so disconnected, I hope he gets butt cancer.

Downloads did plummet after the name change. But likely because non-tech nerds have no idea the name changed.

(citation needed) Seriously there are zero sources, numbers and article ends with a typical interaction bait. As a Turkish person who knows the Turkish shiftdelete I was almost happy that they have an English version for global market but not this tabloid like junk.

Xwitter is a Nazi hate cesspool. I deleted my account not long after Musk took over. I would be delighted to see it fail, and Musk brought down a few notches.

I use X pretty much daily and I have no idea where you are getting this from. Haven't seen a single nazi post.

Your feed is much cleaner than the ones I see, that's for sure. I usually attribute it to being a moderate, since I see fringe nonsense on either end.

I feel like your username suggests a bias on the subject.

Honestly, same. I've seen a severe decline in post quality, but no nazi posts.

I saw that shit all the time before I deleted my account. If you have seen a decline in quality since I deleted my account after Muskrat took over, that place must be absolutely fucked these days.

That's 30% less downloads, not 30% less traffic . I am not sure how that translates to current users.

Good question..

There's always some background noise in installs. People get new devices constantly and they'd usually download it again. Those are fewer

Then there's usually some consistent downloads from new users. Those are probably down

Traffic being down is a good measure and that's dropping too

If it counts updates, that would mean 30% fewer people have the app installed.

Or X don’t pushed any new update in last month 😉

Give the rapid churn in their code base these days, I'm gonna press X to doubt that.

It's barely been 6 weeks since the change from Twitter to X was announced... I don't know for certain but I suspect there to have been at least one update in the last month.

I’m skeptical of this article, but I know my own usage went to almost 0 because of how awful the bots and trolls are now. Blue checks are prioritized in the comment section and they’re usually awful people or maybe paid trolls or bots, and it makes the app unusable and unpleasant. That’s really the thing that killed it for me.

A lot of big-fat-jerks on there lately. 🤷‍♂️

I never used Twitter or X or the company formally known as Twitter or whatever the hell we're calling it now but how did the prioritization work before? Was it just sorted by most retweets or likes?

I would like to formally invite everyone to Mastodon.

Everyone? Like, even the nazis? Because there seem to be an awful lot of them on xitter.

Sure, they can be on their defederated lil nazi instance.

Like that server in Mythic Quest, gather them in one place, unplug, and let them scream into the void.

Is he doing this on purpose? He has to be right? What's the end goal? Was his only goal to destroy Twitter? It's fascinating

Never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence.

Does that axiom really apply to billionaires?

Aside from the fact that it’s a fake dichotomy, yes. He is obviously very incompetent.

I don't see what someone inheriting wealth has to do with their competence.

Well he only ended up buying Twitter because he was forced to when he tried to back out after signing a contract. If he's stupid enough to do that he's stupid enough to ruin the platform through sheer incompetence. That being said, killing Twitter basically helps out him/his financers so I'd suspect at least some of it is on purpose.

"According to a report published by popular research companies"

I'd like to know to whom "popular research companies" refers, and by what means they're measuring "losing 30% of users".

You haven't heard of "Dude" and "Trust me, bro"? They're incredibly popular research companies.

Yeah I've stopped using Xwitter entirely. Musk is an idiot capitalist who ruins everything he touches.

I tried to use it to follow people in crypto but even many of those who stayed are now retweeting right wing conspiracy theories and anti science articles. Twitter is a disgusting hole of hate.

Wow, who would have thought that crypto people, the dumbest people on the entire Internet, would end up posting rw conspiracies.

Wow, who would have thought the mention of crypto would trigger some random moron to embarrass himself with some butthurt statement.

I didn't. I thought such people are not on lemmy yet. I was sadly wrong.

mention of crypto would trigger some random moron to embarrass himself

the self fulfilling prophecy.

Funny when the 1 month old account remarks that to the 9 month old account.

Hate to break it to you bub: the only places where the majority of people do not think cryptocurrencies are a scam, are crypto hangouts, and places where they haven't heard about cryptos at all.

Great content guys, I learned a lot. (writes in notebook: "crypto...is...bad")

Is it funny? Because generally for that to be funny, the account age would have to be linked somehow to credibility. I'm sure you are not stating that, because that would be incredibly stupid.

Please "brake it to me" more. Explain how everyone thinks that. Maybe some study? Some survey? Explain it to me and then explain why I hell would I care? You have no idea how dumb you seem right now. Like some flat earth dumbass explaining how wrong everybody else is.

I apologise if I have offended you or made you doubt your worldview.

And they keep on trying to inflate the userbase with bot accounts whose bios are weird and mostly contain suspicious links, amd use those same bots to randomly like anyone's new posts tweets.

That’s ok, they’ll make up for it by adding 30% more bots.

Boy do I wish the same thing would happen to Meta.

not only that, but i sure do hope mark fuckerberg goes broke in the process.

my usage tanked a lot when he took over, but it's more or less done for good when tweetdeck went premium. I check in on one account now, and occasionally still bitch at customer service accounts. Other than that, Im at mastodon and bluesky.

Same. I have deleted all my tweets/likes/follows and keep the account just as a way to reach customer service accounts (which usually work much better on Twitter/X than by phone/email).

How the fuck is this number not higher?

My exact though at first. Then I remembered probably half of all Xitter accounts are ghost anyway. Which makes 30% overall decrease equivalent to 60% decrease within active users.

You have already applied as much reason as the entire article, and also given as much hard data and sources. In fact, reading your comment is probably worth more than the article.

PS

And NO this is NOT sarcasm!

Inertia. Give it more time.

Also bots. Bots don't have ethics or intolerance, so the people running them have no reason to stop.

How the fuck is this technology?

I agree completely that it shouldn't be, but Twitter and Facebook/Meta are considered tech companies.

Yes Meta has some tech today, but they were considered a tech company from the beginning, merely for being on the Internet!!!

IMO That's like considering a baker a tech company, because they have a cash register with buttons. But that's the world we live in.

That's actually a lot. I didn't think it would be that much. I try not to give into hype but if these numbers are true this might actually be Twitter dying. There is also no going back with some of the decisions elon made.

That's not actually a lot.

This 30% comes after at least as high a percentage already left in the half year after the narcissistic sociopath took over.

Pretty much everyone I was subbed to was already gone, either account closed or inactive, by the time I closed my account.

And my Twitter account was almost as old as my Gmail account. I accrued a rather substantial list of people I followed through the past nearly 2 decades.

Damn, that's even worse! Holy crap. The more people leave the less viable the platform becomes. Social media networks only function when there's other people in them.

Deleted mine even though I actually only used it to read some accounts. It's unfortunate because there's some very knowledgeable people there but I'm not having anything to do with that dickbag.

According to a report published by popular research companies,

Yeah I smell bullshit. I suspect it's going pretty badly for the thing formerly known as Twitter, but this article doesn't show anything, but merely makes a bunch of claims. There is no documented data, and no sources stated.

I haven't deleted my account but it's been dormant for a while. I guess at some point it'll get deleted if I don't touch it, which... fine, I guess.

That is becauae it is a far-right, nazi website. Boycott all companies that use that site or advertise on it

How long before he starts asking the government for a bailout. Is Twitter to big to fail?

Bailouts can't fix a dwindling user base, unless he literally starts paying regular people to use it

Didn't he start asking regular people to pay to use it? Like a read limit or something... I don't really follow the 𝕏 drama anymore.

I’m happy to say I’ve not used Twitter since they killed third party apps. Same reason I stopped using Reddit. Many other issues contributed, but in both cases the third party app situation was the breaking point.

I'm one of them!

o7 Thank you for your service!

Well, I'm obviously a fediverse user now. Mastodon.world answered donation needs too!

Y'know, I had a love/hate relationship to twitter in the before-elon times.

On the one hand, it was a strange, toxic brew of hellish nonsense and porn On the other hand, there was a critical mass of engaged experts on lots of subjects, weighing in on current events in near-real-time.

It was like having the history faculty of several colleges on hand when historical questions came up, but in order to get their takes on anything you'd have to wade through trolls and bots and fascist sycophants to get there.

I'm a sucker for learning things and I'll put up with a lot for the pleasure of feeding my brain but by the time Elon took the reigns the signal:noise ratios had gone too far negative to be worth it.

I think of Twitter , or X, does go away everyone's mental health will improve.

Hopefully Elon will buy Facebook and Instagram next.

Tik tok and Reddit could use some of Musk’s management as well. Although I think Spez has a good handle on the enshitification of Reddit.

I am a Twitter "user" in the sense that I read the site for a few minutes every few days to see the latest news or drama.

Recently all the Elon drama is boring. So I'm in that decreased user count.

I believe in us. We can bring that number to 60% or higher by the end of this year, if we all do our part.

Musk: "Totally intentional, everyone. This is exactly what I planned for. I am, however, going to sue the US Government for allowing freedom of the press to report it."

I uninstalled the app after the rebrand. Twitter bird used occasionally, X app sat there looking like a porn app so I uninstalled.

Good! Though I'm sure many will move to Threads

if you were a tweeter user you have no choice, it is now your X or your ex... social media

Where did they go to though? Mastodon hasn't seen any significant growth since the last spike.

Probably no where. They likely just left Twitter and carried on with whatever else they were doing.

For anyone that’s curious of day to day trends, this account makes a post every hour for new signups per hour/day/week. It’s pretty neat.

Seems to hover around 20,000 new signups per week, and I’ve seen it hit 50,000 during these times when Twitter kicks itself in the nuts.

https://mastodon.social/@mastodonusercount

I assume many went to Threads.

I thought Threads really dropped off too.

All online product launches see a flurry of signups and media coverage of the launch, and then they sink for a while as many accounts go dormant. That’s not surprising behavior. Threads is still growing and businesses and conversations are slowly moving to it.
