What's was your favourite fast food product that unfortunately got retired and never came back?

Kimdracula@lemm.ee to Asklemmy@lemmy.ml – 108 points –

Here, for a while at McDonald's there was a šŸ” called "the 1955" and it was the best, big pieces of onion, an special sauce, buns and big piece of beef with bacon (for Europe standards anyways) it disappeared once and came back for an encore only to be removed again and never return.

Taco Bell Choco-Taco. Yeah, the reanimated corpse of it lives on in some gas station frozen sections, but it's a shitty product. The original one sold at Taco Bell in the 90s was god tier.

I hate to tell you, but even the shitty Choco Tacos were discontinued a few years ago

Did you ever look at the nutritional information on the original Choco Taco?

I think one taco had about 50% of your recommended daily amount of saturated fat.

Taco Bell's Volcano Taco. They brought it back for like a month and took it away again. Technically it's still available in Kuwait but I can't get anyone to mail me a bag of the sauce.

Yes! When taco bell was going for spice and flavor and not just trying to find new ways to add more cheese to everything.

If it's still available in December message me and I'll mail you a bag when I go.

I remember the time when Subway used to serve their sandwiches with the strip of bread on top. Those were the good old days.

You can still get it that way!

Just ask for it 'cut old style'.

unfortunately most people working at subway now are young, and have no idea what you're talking about.

you can't even order a subway melt anymore without explaining what it is.

The true failure of the education system that noone talks about...

No one is two words, Mike. Itā€™s an indefinite pronoun that means nobody.

Can't even get a pizza-meatball-crab sub or an all syrup Dr. Pepper either.

Taco Bell's caramel apple empanada and the double decker.

Caramel apple empanadas were exactly what I was looking for in this comment section. Those were absolutely incredible.

The double decker is still around, they call it something else, but you can still order it.

I donā€™t even like caramel but those empanadas were an absolute delight when I was broke and just entering my adulthood. I would literally look for change just to get one.

Burger King chicken nuggets from the 90s, before the recipe changed to crap. If I had to pick a flavor that I associate with my childhood, this would be it.

The Angus Mushroom & Swiss burger from McDonald's. The Angus was the closest thing they ever had to a real burger, but they were too expensive for most people and were eventually discontinued. Fun fact: wages have stagnated yet their basic burgers now cost more than the Angus did.

Runza used to sell frozen dark chocolate-dipped cheesecake on a stick. They were delicious, and small enough that you wouldn't feel guilty about ordering one.

Yes! Even Wendyā€™s nuggs suck now, and thatā€™s a real shame. They were the closest thing to that peppery goodness I remember of childhood. Also, nice low key ā€˜fuck youā€™ to capitalism and corporate greed, I dig it.

Wendy's ruined the bacon too. It's the same garbage you'd get at Burger King, and it's significantly smaller and tastes worse than the bacon they were using a year or so ago.

Omg the McDonald's Angus burgers were FIRE. I ate wayyyy too many of the Bacon and Cheese ones and occasionally the Mushroom. I even loved they got put in their boxes with the paper burger holders LIKE EVERY BURGER FUCKING SHOULD.

McDonald's Salad Shaker or the McDLT

McDs also had an excellent salad wrap for a couple of years.

The Double Decker taco came back for like a month last year and I went to Taco Bell probably eight times once I realized it because itā€™s my favorite and Iā€™m super pissed that they wonā€™t just make one for me even though they have all of the ingredients, FFS.

It's not illegal to make one at home.

Iā€™ve tried. The thing thatā€™s hard to replicate is the beans, actually. Though Iā€™ve mostly used canned refried beans; Iā€™ve been meaning to get a can of whole pintos and mash them myself, and see if that helps.

You'll probably want to start with dry beans. Canned ones are likely just going to be beans boiled in regular water. Meant to be an ingredient in something rather than the star. But if you make from scratch you can add in flavors: onion, garlic, etc.

Plenty of recipes online.

When making refried beans make sure to use pork fat of some kind. I use bacon fat.

Milk Shakes at just about any fast food restaurants. The machines always seem to be down! Pulled up to an Arby's a few months back to order a Jamoca shake and they said their machine was down. I asked them if I had pulled into the McDonald's drive through by mistake. We all had a big laugh... but that was months ago and they have now put a sticker on the menu that says their shakes are not currently available :(

Went to a Baskin Robins to order a Chocolate Milk shake and they were out of Chocolate ice cream... on multiple occasions. At least they don't have a machine to break down!

Sorry our scoop is down. Can I interest you in a birthday cake?

For a VERY brief time in 2010, Burger King sold bone-in short ribs.

Guys, those were literally the best fucking short ribs I have had in my life. High end BBQ places couldn't even come close. Every Burger King would sell out like instantly whenever they got a shipment in. And then after 2 months... Gone. Forever.

There was a short lived candybar called PB Max that Iā€™ve been craving for like the last 20 years. It actually tasted like peanut butter which, despite my love for peanut butter cups, just completely outdid them for peanutty goodness.

Oh man, that just reminded me that PB Crisps existed. Fuckin loved those things.

See and if people love them, why didn't they sell? I loved DnL but nobody really remembers it.

The only reason I went to McDonald's before covid was because breakfast was available all day.

Huh? Iā€™ve never seen this. But Iā€™ve had a severe McDonalds related Mandela effect recently, so I think I came from a different universe with a slightly different McDonalds

an šŸ”

Going crazy trying to think of what word you use for šŸ” that starts with a vowel.

Oh, and also I used to always get the Santa Fe chicken Gordita at Taco Bell until it went away.

1 more...

It was actually the steak bagel breakfast sandwich at McDonalds... until that garbage institution actually brought it back defector! It trned out to be a weaker approximatation with different/less seasoning on meat and different sauce, but close enough for nostalgia

McDonald's pizza. Technically like 1 location still makes it. It's mostly just a big nostalgia hit for me.

A Rax roast beef sandwich.

Wendy's pitas. When I worked there in the mid-90s, they had pitas that I quite liked.

Now I want fast food, but it's not worth the hour to get to McD's and back.

The made-to-order pizza they serve in Orlando isā€¦.. not great. Itā€™s a novelty.

Oh! Rax!

I just said that Oh exactly the same as they say before ā€œShell shock!ā€ in Turtles in Time

I completely forgot about Rax

The burger king (hungry jacks here) chicken burgers with the painted on grill lines.

The original Enchirito. It was fairly large and had more sauce and cheese.

Also the Bell Burger.

How can no one else miss Taco Bell's naked chicken chalupa? I loved that thing.

And the McRib is missed every time it leaves.

Yessss!! And when they had taquitos with the different dipping sauces!

Santa Fe items at Taco Bell. Also the Volcano Nachos.

Carl's Jr. recently discontinued their Beyond Famous Star, which I honestly think tasted better than a regular Famous Star.

Whataburger's A1 sauce burger with bacon. They got bought out by another company and it vanished šŸ˜„

McDonaldā€™s Angus Burger , only burger they sold for several years that didnā€™t taste like cardboard.

It was also the only time I can recall them having a swiss and mushroom burger on the menu. It was delicious.

Not exactly fast food but kinda junk food, the sugar free lime Red Bull it was so good it was an after work treat I would get myself. Then it just slowly started disappearing from shelves and then they were gone, I would love it if they brought it back. As for fast food double decker tacos at Taco Bell, they had a good long run so I canā€™t be too disappointed, but miss just being able to go in and buy them when I want.

I loved that Red Bull! I would buy it as a treat after work and it was so refreshing. I don't know why they discontinued it!

Technically, you can still get it, but the 7 layer burrito was my go-to order when I was on the road and forced to have fast food. The Taco Bell in the next town over was right off the highway, so as I would be zipping between patients, it was usually the only realistic option other than a truck stop that had put people in the hospital three times. So, you know, l decided to live, mas or not lol.

There was a point in time where I ended up eating a lot of taco bell. Enough that I'd had everything on their menu at least once, up until 2005. After that, I haven't been able to work, so no zipping around three counties wiping butts, which means no need for fast food except as an occasional thing. So I've lost track of if they've had any temporary stuff or not.

But, yeah, the 7layer was bomb. Like I said, you can still get the same thing by messing around and adding things to other burritos, but that's a pain in the ass for drive through, if you feel me.

Mirroring Taco Bell here. Mine was the cheesey bean and rice burrito....they removed it and re released it, but it's not the same at all. No pico, almost no creamy jalapeno sauce and just a bunch of rice and beans now.

And they're obnoxiously expensive for what you get. You could get far better food for the prices Taco Bell demands nowadays.

When they where 99c they were great, but now they're like $1.89 or something and missing basically everything that made them great.

Over where I am it's closer to 3 dollars for the cheapest burritoes. Stuff like the 5-layer and grilled cheese burrito are 7 bucks!

Holy shit, that's like a sit down Mexican restaurant for most of the USA. ($7 for a burrito)

There's a reason Primus' Les Claypool mentions the 7 Layer Burrito in "Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver".

The shit was good.

Two things from Wendy's:

First bring back the old chicken nugget meat. The spicy nuggets taste like trash now.

Second that Jalapeno Fresco Spicy Chicken Sandwich.

Wendy's chicken sandwiches are very good. I had one with a pretzel bun and it was amazing.

I generally mourn actual Hardee's. There were several things i miss from their menu pre-Carl's Jr.

I finally went to a Carlā€™s Junior after decades, and goddamn those are big burgers

$1.50 JBCs. Not worth the 3.50 they cost now. Used to be bigger and cheaper.

Also, the Arch Deluxe and personal pizzas from McDonald's.

Not "fast food" but a junk food, cadburys used to do a chocolate sponge cake in a tin that was the best. Im not even a massive fan of chocolate but these things were great!

They still have those where I live I think. Chocolate shavings on top?

Nah not shavings, it was a chocolate sponge cake with a chocolate sauce over the top

Well that's a new one. Looks delicious. I'm a big Cadbury fan.

The Arby's Triple Cheese Melt. I think they stopped making it by the late 90s. Every once in a while it would show up again randomly and go away again a few weeks later but I don't think I've seen one since like 2005

The Mac Jr (1 patty, no middle bun). I used to order it with a small fry. Iā€™m small, so it was the perfect size for me so I could finish everything and not be stuffed.

Not exactly what op is talking about but: fish and chip shops that don't sell spam butties, like they have chip butties, but not spam butties. Smh

Burger King Whoppers in the 90s.

They use to taste really, really good. But now 30 years later theyā€™re made with dogshit tier beef and terrible buns and the whole thing just sucks.

The Mexican pizza that had olives on it.

mcdonalds:

dark meat nuggets

beef tallow fries

cinnamelts

cinnamon roll

apple fritter

chicken carbonara

chickfila:

chicken egg and cheese bagel

chicken salad sandwich

cinnamon cluster

oatmeal

cole slaw

McDonald's Beef tallow fries. One of the great losses of my early life.

I will forever miss the old pepper and onion mix that CFA had before the breakfast revamp.

The chicken salad recipe was pretty basic, if I remember right though. They have it listed on their app, too, I think; The only important note is you have to use debreaded fried filets, not ones with breading on. Grilled will change the flavor a little because of the marinade.

Link to the CFA Recipes page (may open in app)

They've got the coleslaw in there too, but I didn't work prep when we had it and cannot vouch for the accuracy.

Jack in the Box - Big Cheeseburger

Taco Bell - Volcano tacos

Holy shit i remember that one!!! It was the last time I remember actually having a really good burger at a fast food place like McD. You from Germany? This mustve been more than 10 yrs ago right?

Nein. Italy.

but I've been in Munich drunk once. The girls are hot

The Wendy's 4-Alarm Spicy Chicken Sandwich.

Taco Bell mexi nuggets I think they called them, they were just tater tots with taco seasoning I think but they were the bomb.

McDonald's Grilled Chicken Flatbread. I sometimes feel like I'm the only one that remembers them, but they were so delicious around 2003 or 2004, can't really remember anymore.

The fajitas at McDonald's. They were decent for the price.

Mcdonald's chicken selects! And by extension the snack wraps. Also their very limited basket of fries. I feel like I might be the only person who even remembers it.

McDonalds pre 90s fries, McDonalds fried apple and cherry pies, McDonalds pre-90s shakes, Dairy Queen's Queen burger, Sonics pre 2000s burgers and the Sonic fish sandwich.

I feel like Iā€™m cursed or McDā€™s is taking a huge nose dive. I havenā€™t had a good, hot, not-soggy, salty McDonalds french fry in like 2-3 years. Every time I go, the fries are super gross. Iā€™ve taken several road trips and the only consistency Iā€™ve experienced is how terrible the fries have been.

Always ask for fresh fries if you're not in a hurry. If its a rush you don't need to worry about it, but that guarantees you'll get them crispy and as good as they'll ever be...

It's not just you. I almost always get fries that I think have been mostly cooked earlier then dunked in the fryer for a warm up before they serve them.

Burger King had actual Mac&Cheese burger patties for a very brief period and it was the best thing ever.

SmashBurger did the same and also had a spicy version that was awesome; also gone šŸ˜”

I can't find Starbucks ginger molasses cookies, although technically they're still sold? I could fly to Seattle I guess.

At McDonalds in India, there was a chocolate thick shake. It was basically chocolate shake that was frozen. It was served from a softie-machine of sorts. I had to suck the straw so effing hard to have 1 sip of the shake.

I used to buy it and let it melt for a while , just so that I can drink it through straw.

They discontinued it. Idk why.

Gotta chime in with the bacon cheddar potato wedges and chili cheese curly fries at Jack in the Box. Jack in general has become shit tier now.

Also, McDonalds used to have a super excellent breakfast burrito with sausage, bacon, peppers, everything. Back when breakfast all day was a thing.

Jalapeno rings at del taco.

Sliced jalapeno, breaded and fried. Served with a ranch-esqe sauce.

Simple and so fucking delicious.

Common in Texas, or sometimes sliced longways and called Texas toothpicks.

The sourdough ranch bacon cheeseburger from Carl's Jr was my go to burger back in the early 2000s. They brought back another sourdough sandwich a few years ago and it was also good but unfortunately that's also discontinued.

The sourdough from Jack in the Box is close but with the lack of lettuce and onions feels a little dry.

"hi. I'd like one quarter-pounder (aka royale) with no cheese, but with Mac sauce on the heel. Thanks."

That's kinda it.

Idk if this counts but the people who make Nettle's sausage changed their recipe and now the sausage sucks

Don't know whether pizza from a place you can sit down in and eat counts, but there used to be a place called Rocky Rococo's. Best pizza in the whole city, until they disappeared off the map. Now I'd have to go to the other side of the country just for their pizza. For a place I wouldn't consider a restaurant, they had some of the absolute best pizza I've ever had.

Jack in the Box had the worldā€™s best cheese sticks. Iā€™ll forever miss them.

Those apple pie slices that came in the card carton thing? So crispy and beautiful.

Dairy queen nerds blizzard. You can fake it with a sonic blast but it's not the same.
