Spotify Wrapped 2023 is out, what's your top artist and top song for the year?

toomanypancakes@lemmy.world to Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world – 131 points –

If you don't use Spotify, what's your favorite artist and song right now?

227

They called me a vampire for listening to too much "emotional, atmospheric music."

and you're not going to SHARE what this emotional, atmospheric music was?

Apologies.

I believe the responsible parties are: Lorn, less.people, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Death in Vegas, Shlohmo, Ramin Djawadi, and Gustavo Santaolalla.

Not really my jam but I tracked through a few tracks of each band. I will say threw things.

  1. The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble is a fire band name.
  2. Something about that song they have Embers feels nice.
  3. Their description overall was very apt.

Samhain Labs is my jam off that album. TKDE is something else, that's for sure.

I suppose you're right, just wasn't expecting to earn 'Vampire' today. Looks like I'll be watching Louis and Lestat this evening.

My top artist was Tenacious D, and my top song was Virtual Insanity by Jamiroquai.

He does not need a microphone. His voice is fucking POWERFUL!!!

Funnily enough, that was my most listened song from them! I got to see them do it live during the Spicy Meatball Tour, and his voice is fucking (fucking) POWERFUL!!!

Most played artist: Yellowcard

Most played song: Sharks - Imagine Dragons

Every time someone says I should check out Imagine Dragons I just start to imagine dragons. Then I've got not time for music.

I feel like I need to revisit Yellowcard, one of their albums got heavy play in my early teenagehood.

They just went back on limited tour for 20th anniversary of Ocean Avenue and I got to finally see them in concert. It was amazing. They also said that they were thinking about coming out with some new stuff.

For me Delain is my top artist, and Surgery from The Vincent Black Shadow was my top song!

I have no idea how that is. But our usernames are...related. So, I felt compelled to respond.

edit: that Vincent Black Shadow song is pretty good

The Vincent Black Shadow is fantastic but they broke up way too early and only have two albums :(

For the first time in many years I've no EDM in my top five....feels weird. And apparently, I like A Day to Remember a lot more than I thought.

I tried to find someone with a higher play time lol

Not easy to do. Breaking 100k minutes would be at the upper edge of my Spotify listening limit.

Reasonable! I usually need music to focus on work. I also have music going any time I'm driving, for sure. And sometimes I even have it going when I sleep--although, I don't think I did a lot of night music in 2023. Definitely more 2022. I think my number was in the 180s last year, maybe because I've been watching more Youtube videos this year. I should cut Youtube out and go back to music--probably a healthier use of my time lol.

My top artist is King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and the top song is Magenta Mountain by them.

I wonder if there's any gizzhead here lol

King Gizz was number 1 on my list this year too. Honestly, surprised how many I'm seeing in this thread lol

Bit of a mixed bag. Arctic monkeys and fall out boy makes sense as top 2. I think my music taste varies wildly enough that Katy Perry and P!nk must have just sneaked in there over other artists.

I use YouTube Music. Here is my recap:

Upvote because you're in Berkeley or Cambridge

Washington State. If you meant Berkeley, CA that would be closer than Mass.

Favourite Artist: My Chemical Romance

Favourite Song: Misery Business - Paramore

Misery Business is such a good song! Always gotta crank up the volume when that comes up!

My most listened band was Linkin Park, and my most listened song was Intergalactic - Beastie boys.

Top artist: Toby Fox as is usual every year for me lol (Undertale/Deltarune developer)
Top song: Nichibotsu by EX-LYD

:::spoiler Top 5 of each Artists

  1. Toby Fox
  2. 2 Mello
  3. Waterflame
  4. EX-LYD
  5. Danny Baranowsky

  5. Apocalypse by Thomas Happ (Axiom Verge) :::

Bring the madness - Noisestorm Remix by Pegboard Nerds, Excision, Mayor Apeshit, Noisestorm

Been a while since I've seen people mention Pegboard Nerds.

man I used to listen to them and Krewella a lot when I was 16-18 lol. I've still got a soft spot for that era of EDM.

Top artist: Zeal and Ardor

Top song: Endeavour by Together to the Stars

I listened to a lot of nujabes this year

I learned of nujabes from listening to the Samurai Champloo soundtrack. It's one of my favorite albums to listen to when running

2023wrapped-summary-share.jpg

Apparently I listen like I'm British and I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment or an insult.

This is almost identical to my Wrapped last year, with the exception of Kow Otani (Gundam Wing OST)

Top Artist - The Beatles (I relistened to their remaster of Revolver a lot this year, it's really very good!)

Top Song - 'Give It Up' by Public Enemy

I listen to PolarisRadio every day on my way to.work. 273 plays for Sea of Stars. I like most of his works. Gorillaz is also in that Playlist but I don't get that far every day driving.Sabaton and Voltaire are straight choices I hit play on. I'll listen to their new albums day one.

My daughter uses my Spotify a lot. Let it go is the favorite song. Hooja is the artist.

I don't know why Nobuo Uematsu is on the top, but I am not mad.

Quick question, what do you think of Gayazov Brothers?

Top .05% for Rosendale too. Definitely binged.

It looks like my top song this year was "Relapse" by Wage War, and top artist was Self Deception:

Makes sense, great tracks and artists all around!

FYI Apple Music does something similar that is also out

Top song is Comin Around by Andrew Duhon.

Top artist is The Tedeschi Trucks band, no surprise there. Best God damn band on tour right now. Listened to them so much this year as I got tickets to one of their shows this past July.

It was a good year of listening for me.

Edit: after scrolling through the comments, pretty cool seeing very few repeated bands.

Did the same thing with King Gizz this year as I did QOTSA in 2020. Find them around September, listen to them almost exclusively for the rest of the year, and end up in the top 0.5% or better

Marsh has been on a mad run this year doing All-night long 5 hour sets across the UK and USA.

Tritonal and Above & Beyond! Are the kids still smearing Vicks on each other? Good times.

The scene is still good, I'm not clued up on the Vicks but from searching no, it's not common at all now but rolling is still 90% of the crowd. Went to a Stu Allen memorial show last week with my mates dad, the 50s crowd still got it, glow sticks and whistles.

More Anjunadeep these days for me. Jody Wisternoff (Way out west) and James Grant (Jonos Brother). They luckily do a lot of shows near me so it's quite available but we travel for them.

Never been to a tritonal event or artist show actually, quite new to me these.

That's good to hear. I always had fun there.

It's an old joke referencing some TV show or movie, I forget. A Reefer Madness sort of vibe but for MDMA and the whole scene. "Kids smearing Vicks on each other, eating drugs that take ice cream scoops out of their brains," or something along those lines, real pearl-clutchy. My friends and I thought it was hilarious and started leaning into it. "Oh yeah, huge scoops, and we slather the Vicks on with trowels."

Takes me back. Spin some glow sticks for me the next time you go. And stay hydrated!

The songs are a bit weird to me? But the artists are pretty accurate.

I dont axtually know how spotify calculates the songs, but I believe its a mix between minutes spent listening to the song and how many times the song was played

I've spent a LOT of time listening on the youtube channel "My Analog Journal" too, a ton of great guests with awesome sets. My favorite this year is Psychedelic and Folk music from Britanny with Lรฉna C

Eyyy, I had a little Altin Gรผn phase this year too

ETA: also wtf, someone showed my My Analogy Journal this spring and I spent weeks trying to remember what it was called.

And I started listening to Purity filter in october, I am addicted

20ce79c5-4

Wow, I recently got into breakcore and Chill Breakcore sound so nice.

Edit: Chrysalis from Purity Filter got me goosebumps just from listening.

Nice, carpenter brut

Have you seen them live? They're out touring atm

Wish I could, but I don't live in Europe or the US so :(

Damn :/ I caught them randomly on a Tuesday

Can certainly recommend it if the opportunity strikes

My daughter's bedtime playlist killed my algorithm

Any industrial metal recommendations? I like a lot of industrial, but I unfamiliar with the metal part. Thanks if you choose to share!

Sure, as with all sub-sub-genres the lines are blurry.

My more industrial favorites: KMFDM , Ministry , Frontline Assembly , Skold , Gary Numan , 3TEETH, Celldweller ,

More metal influenced: Khonsu, Love and Death, I:Scintilla , PIG, Gravity Kills

I listened to cell dweller for the first time in years yesterday. It was rough, but def brought back memories. I saw Gary Numan, FLA and ministry last year haha. Going to check out your other suggestions. Thanks again!

My 10month old son has always just shut up and listened whenever sound of silence comes on (the disturbed version, he doesn't care for S+G it seems) and that was my number 1 by a distance I think.

367 listens, so more than daily, I don't mind though as it's a proper banger and I could listen to David Draimans voice forever.

God im so boring.

The last few yeara i listened to such a variety. This year its been the harmontown podcast and a bit of rock.

I like my music shreddy and busy. Although, my top songs wouldn't really reflect that

Artist: Nine Inch Nails (top .05% of listeners)

Song: Here, at the End of All Things by foxwedding

https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/pictrs/image/290fdf77-89bb-4938-a83e-edba0a201e91.jpeg

Iโ€™m top 1% in something, so thatโ€™s nice

Got top 0.001% of Garry Read, wonder how many people are ahead of me :p

Not surprisingly, Jimmy Buffett

Not much actual time spent listening, since I listen to Radio Margaritaville in the car and at work most of the time.

These are mostly from Daily Mixes and artist/song radios

Mine is just a lil bit of mostly german hip hop. But lately Ive listened a lot to Finch and hardstyle.

On Apache207 the man of the hour I had about 7.5k minutes listened.

I've got two, from Spotify and Apple Music.

Both have Steps as my favourite artist which mostly isn't surprising. The top song on the two differ, though - for Spotify it's Samo mi se spava by Serbian singer Luke Black, and Apple Music it's Twisted by Australian prog metal band Voyager. Both artists entered Eurovision 2023, though Twisted wasn't the entry.

Awaiting ListenBrainz's which'll be released in the new year, as that will have some of the most accurate data, as it includes things from my local library

I can't even get through it. Is there a way to just skip to the stats and not have to watch their shit presentation?

just tap the right side of the screen.

Top artist is Lana Del Rey. Top song is Masochism by Ky Vรถss.

Apparently Reptilia by The Strokes and I Am the Highway by Audioslave were approximately equal and I am in the top .05% of Marcy Playground listeners.

Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness because I saw him at his birthday show last year and love his vocals.
Let You Down by NF sneaks into every playlist cause I got emotional damage. Lol

I love me some Julia Wolf and Kailee Morgue. Not sure how Drake is on there... I have zero songs from him in my top 100

Psst doesnt report the songs played and the time spent listening to Spotify, so it only reports my mobile usage. :/

Kinda weird how skewed it got. I didn't think I listened to all that much Clark and JIL.

Top artist: Juan Gabriel Top song: E mรฒ e mรฒ - Peppino di Capri

Top artist is Les Cowboys Fringants, which happens to be my favourite band.

Their singer died on November 17 of prostate cancer. He had it since 2020 but only revealed it to the fans on 2022.

I've seen them almost a year ago at the Centre Bell in Montreal (around 20k seats amphitheatre). It was the most memorable show I've ever seen.

They are a band that has been running for something like 25 years. Multiple generations have grown with them. The Quebec is still mourning him.!

61493f88-6

I really didnโ€™t listen to much music this year. I guess not engaging in my main hobby that let me listen to music as much really hindered my listening time.

Top Artist: Sadistik

Top Song: Negative by Lil Xtra

Apparently I've been listening to the new Gunship album too much, said I was in the top 1% of Gunship listeners.

Top songs got weird because it's basically the songs from my workout mixes, but Eras legit got a ton of play from me.

What I think is really fun is my genre mix

Went through a strong UK Hip Hop phase this summer lol

I'm in the top 3% of listeners for Sabaton, but my most played song was 59 times Another Love by Tom Odell. And I'm an alchemist because I create more playlists than other users. Overall I listened to 44 genres.

My favorite artist was Kendrick Lamar and his song Rich Spirit was my most played this year.

I swear my tastes are much more varied than this screenshot would lead you to beleive.

But also post your favorite punk songs

I randomly got into "she's kerosene" by the interrupters this year. Saw it on a very amateur bmx clip reel and couldn't get it out of my head all year.

Having said that, it didn't make my Spotify wrapped list.

Pretty fun album, my girlfriend jokes it would be her pro wrestling walk out music.

New Order tracks for top artist as I listened to them a ton after seeing them in concert... 36 years after the last time I saw them play. lol

Til They Drop is my "driving around by myself with the music up" jam. I guess I was doing that a lot this year.

(If you're wondering why mine looks weird it's from YT Music instead of Spotify)

I always find with these recaps that I don't remember listening to one specific song more than others, and I'm constantly surprised by what the top 5 are. That being said, I usually just listen to the personalized mixes, so maybe part of it is the algorithm deciding that I really like a song because I haven't skipped it ๐Ÿคท

Based on that list alone I'd say you're 31.

Honestly that's a good guess, you're less than 5 years off haha

My favorite artist is Acaz (german rapper). Can't tell you my favorite song of his because I love all of them

I don't know who the artist is but ever since the game got pulled from play testing I have been listening to THE FINALS OST lately

Kinda to be expected for me. Had my eurobeat and j-pop phase.

That's a lot of minutes listened! I've still yet to beat the 100k minutes, last couple years I had around 90k :D

I listen to music almost permanently at work (5-6h) + commute (about 45min) + at home.
It quickly adds up.

Song: fake me by Itou Kanako Artist: Itou Kanako

Top song 2 years in a row now, and top artist for 3 years now :)

Well, the intro tracks for ASOT and ABGT kind of skewed things. But anyway...

  • Top Artist: Guiseppi Ottaviani
  • Top Song: Follow the Waves - Kyau & Albert

And apparently I listened to Sia - Elastic Heart a shitload of times. ๐Ÿค”

Edit:

  • 21,068 minutes
  • Top Genre: Progressive Trance (well duh)

I use Apple Music, but my top artist was AJR. 14 of my top 15 songs were by them. Over half my listening time. Their just resonate with my life right now, and I canโ€™t get enough.

My second my played was Snails House. I love the bops they put out!

https://sopuli.xyz/pictrs/image/4dd177ab-1821-4ccb-ba87-d7249ff4bcde.jpeg

Didnโ€™t realize I listened to so much Arcade Fire this year. Kinda weird.

waterflame

That's a blast from the past! Those songs made up my childhood, lived em and loved em.

This is rather a replay of the past ~two months since I've switched to Apple Music sometime in September, but here!

(For some reason Apple Music has two artist profiles of Ember Falls, that's why they're there twice)

Also, as for current favorite artist/album/song, I would say:

  • Favorite Artist: This one is hard to decide because there's a lot of candidates, but in terms of "will I like probably anything they release?" probably Young Medicine.
  • Favorite Album: CCL Dive by Cityfires. This has been my favorite album for a long time. Make sure to listen to it with headphones or in a quiet room, because it has a lot of quiet parts and small details.
  • Favorite Song: daisy chain by wishlane, jacob geoffrey & defsharp. Absolute banger, love the energy and I definitely listened to this on repeat for a while when I found it.

Recently discovered Moscow Death Brigade in the last 2 months and became a top 0.5% listener in that time.

It has absolutely ruined my Wrapped.

I just watched Junior Eurovision last Sunday.

I have to say, Fia (the German representative) had the song with the best message, and I liked her backstory a lot. The song she submitted is called "Ohne Worte" (translation: without words).

She also participated in the Voice Germany.
