How many showers do you take a day?

lacarsi@lemmy.ml to Asklemmy@lemmy.ml – 238 points –

Curiosity only.

Here in Brazil it's very common to have several showers a day. I, for example, take two. The first is when I wake up, before I go to work, and the second is when I get home from work. I wake up at 6.30am and get home at 8pm.

edit: I said bath, but I meant shower.

That seems really intense to me. Even if you mean shower when you say bath I can’t imagine doing it twice a day. In the summer I normally shower once every two days. In the winter once every 3 days. I am located in northern Germany so it might be a culture difference.

it's only normal to take a twice a day bath in a hot tropical climate.

like it's only normal to take a bath twice a week in a cold geographical area.

Your comment is important. Many people from tropical climates think that people who don't take many showers a day are unhygienic. Just as many people from colder climates think that people who shower a lot are crazy.

I live in a mountain town, and I still shower every day when I get home from work. I am an electrician and tend to get pretty dirty throughout the day, and at minimum need to clean my feet so my boots don't develop stank. I may forgo a shower on Sunday if I've spent the day on the couch or being lazy around the house, but if I've had any form of physical activity, shower.

Pretty much. I’m in Texas. During the winter, every two or three days is fine. As long as I’m not doing anything to get dirty, it just isn’t needed. Excess showers will just dry my skin out, and washing my hands/feet/face is enough for daily maintenance.

But during the summer, all bets are off. Shower in the morning because the AC in apartments struggles to keep the bedroom cool and I woke up in a pool of sweat. Then sweat heavily on the way to the car, at lunch, on the way home from work, and again when taking the dog for a walk. Of course I need another shower by bedtime.

In the US daily is pretty standard, I'll maybe do two depending on exercise or working outside

Yes, the actual difference doesn't concern the climate, whether it's cold or hot, it's simply cultural. In Germany, is it common for all Germans to adopt the same bathing posture or does it depend on the region?

I think it is the same across all of Germany. I think it might be similar for most of Northern Europe if I had to guess.

Excuse me what? I'm German and I shower daily. I know nobody who doesn't.

Hi, I am dutch and live in austria so on average that makes me german.

I shower maybe once a week but I am also very depressed so take it with a grain of salt.

México here. I do not know anyone who does not shower at least once a day. Summer or winter.

Belgian here. We are known to be average at best. Hope you be better soon. I used to bathe 3 to 4 times a week. Quick showers actually. I started making it cleansing ritual after coming home from work. It became something that made me mentally better. Some music, a podcast, whatever works for you, and a bit of me-time. One time a week is ok when it's cold outside but I can imagine that people notice in summertime. They do, even if they don't tell you. Physical care is personal care and reflects on your metal health.

It mainly depends on the season. Southern Germany may have more sun hours and slightly warmer climate, but not enough to take effect on the showering schedule. Some people shower every day nevermind the weather, but I would say every 2-3 days is standard. In summer or after workout it may be everyday or even twice, but nothing comparable to brazilian climate. Of course people have jobs where they get dirty, but that's another topic.

0.5 showers a day

Ah yes, the classic 7 showers every other Monday.

I shower every other day - four times a week.

If I go every other day I will be in the shower 4-5 times a week, is that over showering?

I typically shower for 60-90 minutes, I push my self and raise the temperature each week.

As an American, I shower every morning to help wake up and get rid of bed head. I shower at night if I've worked out that day.

I shower at night if I've worked out that day.

So you never shower at night?

Goteeeeem

I’ll only shower in the evening if I’ve got a haircut or I’ve shaved my pubes off.

In this thread: People who do not grasp the intention of the question and focus on the semantics of a foreign lenguage being translated as best as possible for OP.

For this context alone: BATH = SHOWER

For all other times, yes they do mean different things.

Thanks, but it was my mistake. I've already edited the post.

Damn, you work way too much. How do you even have time to post on Lemmy?

I shower around 0.5-0.75 times/day.

The biggest problem is the time I waste on public transport. My working hours are from 9am to 6pm.

Every 1-3 days depending on if I go to the gym, temperature outside, if I need to look nice, or if ima even bother leaving the house lol

Taking multiple baths a day can dry out your skin really quickly, you need to take one a day, at most. Even so, the areas that need to be washed daily are your pits, face, feet and groin. You could get away with a "whores bath" (washing just those 4 parts with a soapy rag) most days and a full bath every few days.

The exception being if you sweat a lot or have a dirty job of course.

I agree, and there are studies on the amount of showers we can take. I, for example, work sitting down and with the air conditioning on. The problem is travelling from my home to work. It's impossible not to arrive at work very sweaty. An extremely crowded train/bus or just walking for five minutes is enough to make you sweat a lot.

Not of it's just a quick rinse in cold water. Many people in Latin America take a shower multiple times a day but it's not what people in the US would call a shower. It's quick and often doesn't involve soap. I shower at least twice a day but only one of those is a real "shower" shower with soap.

Come visit Brazil during summer, then we'll see if you keep that opinion.

I second this as a principle, though I have a hard time not showering once per day. It's a complicated balance, between not drying your skin with water and soap and not smelling.

I lived in Brazil for quite some time and, it being a huge country, I behaved differently depending if I was in a tropical or subtropical climate. I would mostly have one shower in the morning, except when it was mad hot and humid, when no matter how lightly you dressed, you'd still be drenched in sweat after a while

Living in New England, United States, I shower on the three days a week that I work. On days off, I only shower if I've been working in the yard or something like that.

When I lived in the Caribbean, I showered at least once, often twice a day. It's very different in the tropics lol

[For the sake of other commenters: OP likely meant washing oneself, regardless of immersion bath or not. It's just that Portuguese "banho" can mean both "shower" and "bath".]

From 4 to 12 times a week. If it's mid-winter and I spent the whole day working (from home, no heavy labour), I might skip a shower day, never two in a row because that's nasty. If it's hot I'll probably take a proper/cleaning shower every morning, plus a quick shower around 18:00. (I'm from Paraná.)

The cold in Paraná is a delight, right? Here in Rio de Janeiro, the cold is an illusion. I think I can go without a shower for a day, if I don't have to leave the house and it's freezing cold.

All the Brazilians I knew were shocked when they learned I only took one shower per day. Most of them claimed to take 3 per day. I just chocked it up to their being in a warmer climate.

Can any Brazilians here confirm taking ~3 showers/day?

Not Brazil but my brother lived in a similar climate and showered before work, at lunch (everyone went home at lunch most days), and before bed.

He also had a massive stack of undergarments which included white t-shirts. He would sometimes change shirts more than he showered. For context he had to wear office attire but could wear Bermuda shorts.

Further context, we are swarthy Canadians that sweat when we eat a sandwich but he's was really thin/fit at the time. Still sweaty.

btw, swarthy means dark-skinned. Did you mean stocky or some similar non-slim word?

I was thinking hairy and so on. Thank you for correcting me.

We're a blend of Scottish and Acadian French. The term I used makes no sense. Sorry, long day.

That's not common, no. 1 per day is the bare minimum, though, and 2 per day during the work week is usual.

Brazilian. I only take one shower/day unless it's very hot, then it's two. I don't think I ever took three showers/day. But bear in mind that the climate is very different depending on where you live in Brazil.

The last bath I took was probably at least ten years ago. (Not counting swimming in a lake or pool or anything like that)

WHAT?

The US has more of a shower culture than a bath culture. I haven’t taken a bath in over a decade, but I shower after my daily exercise.

Not the person you are responding to, but here in the US, we typically don't take baths and instead shower. I usually only take a bath if I am sick and want to soak in warm water to relax.

Most of the tubs I've had in america are too small for me to actually use. Both too shallow and too short. Half my body would be out of the water.

My last bath was also around 10 years ago in a hotel that had a nice deep tub.

There's a couple of mildly funny interactions in here. Question in the reverse, does that mean you're often showering without a full scrub (a rinse, we'd call it) regularly?

Once a day until it gets into sweaty season, then whatever i need to maintaindecorum.

I had a bath bath last year, I think?

The shower I'm talking about is actually a full shower, twice a day. Where I live, a quick shower with just water is when you're at home and you can't take a full shower because of the heat, so you stay in the backyard, with a swimming pool, a shower, or you take a quick dip with water to ease the heat.

I was wrong, I only had a bath when I was a child. I'm sorry.

Two or three showers... a week

Less than one a day. If I’m just hanging around the house I don’t bother. During the work week, once a day. If I’ve done something that works up a sweat and/or gets me dirty (yard work, cleaning the car, etc.) that gets a shower.

I assume by baths you also mean showers. I think almost everyone I've ever met including myself would limit to once per day unless they specifically get dirty or sweaty from exercise.

Not shower, bath. Scrub all parts of the body with soap, shampoo, conditioner and post-bath deodorant. Women don't usually wash their hair every day here.

2 more...

I have a shower every morning, first thing, will only skip a morning shower on the rare day in just laying about the house.

Will have a second shower only if I've been doing something sweaty/dirty like mowing or bush walking.

Edit: Worth adding that in an Aussie, not in a humid or overly hot location and don't have a physical job.

Depression = twice in the last month. I have an appointment to adjust my medication.

I really hope things improve for you. If talking to a random internet stranger would help, I'm here.

Usually once per day

I often skip 1 day if i have no plans and just hang out at home. But never 2.

Once a day usually, not always. Sometimes a little less but when it’s really hot outside I take 2. If I was living in Brasil, I’d take 2.

Unless I'm doing yard work or similar, I will shower every other day, sometimes 2 days. My skin gets unbearably dry and itchy if I shower more often.

I shower every night before going to sleep. I like being clean in bed.

Me too. If I sleep without a shower my body itches a lot.

Living in Germany (so under normal circumstances not a very hot climate) i shower once a day except when going to the gym, doing hard manual labour and so on.

The interesting thing is: When i was a kid and young adult (so in the dark ages of the 80s to late 90s) i only showered once every 2 - 4 days and never smelled bad...

One, but I do take it every day.
My scalp gets too oily and I develop pimples in no time if I don't wash my hair.
It really sucks, my partner can go without a shower multiple days and still look awesome. No, I'm not jealous... kinda..

Usually every other day, unless I've been for a run and then I'll shower straight after but won't bother washing my hair, it takes too long.

It depends on the weather, how active I've been, how presentable I need to look for something, etc.

Normally I can skip a day, sometimes two, between showers. I don't live a super active life, and I shave my head so don't really have to worry about my hair getting greasy and gross.

If I'm having a more active day or it's hot out I'm probably showering every day, and depending on what's on my schedule for the day and what I get up to in between I may end up showering 2 or 3 times.

I think anything more than one or two a day is considered unhealthy for your skin/hair.

Damm wake up 6:30 home at 8 what a long work day.

I always shower when i wake up

Thats a Los Angeles commuter day too. 1.5 hr commute one hour unpaid lunch 8 hour shift

In the winter months a shower every night. Sometimes I skip a night if I’m lazy or I’ve stayed home all day.

In the summer I will maybe take 2-3. One is a proper shower. The two or three are quick 20 second cold water rinse to cool myself down. Helps to have one right before bed on a hot night.

I heard more than 1 a day is unhealthy

I think you're thinking about it being bad for your skin. I think there's some validity to this, but I can't be certain. Any dermatologists in the house? Moisturizer seems like a good idea.

Since I've moved from a coast to a more inland city, a lot less. It sounds gross, but I'm down to once every other day. I don't sweat as much, my clothes don't stink as much, and I don't feel as 'swampy' as I used to. Also if I shower everyday here my skin goes bananas dry.

1 more...

Once. If I bathe twice in one day, my skin will dry out.

What makes my skin stay ok during summer? I do take several baths per day (in the sea). Is it that there’s no soap involved or maybe the salt water?

I live in Florida. I shower once a day in the evenings.

same! i have to shower right before bed or the stickiness of my thighs to the sheets will bug me enough to prevent me from falling asleep.

Yeah, I work in a warehouse. It's pretty dusty in there. I don't want all of the dirt and grime to end up in my bed.

Normally one but it's worth pointing out I don't live in a warm country, it's freezing here. I am not a morning person so I tend to take showers in the evening because I just can't be bothered in the morning, again because it's cold I don't really want to get undressed and get wet.

On average, once a day. I had two today, one in the morning, and one after my evening workout, but I won't take one tomorrow.

There are occasionally days where I end up taking two. It's usually because of a long bike ride in the morning and showering, then going out for lunch or errands, then mowing the yard in the afternoon.

Depends, since I worked from home it tends to be every other day or third day. Kind of a bad habit but when you live alone ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

One after the gym around 8:30 a.m.; another at 11 p.m.

US here. I can't remember the last time I had a bath. I'm very tall, so I don't fit into tubs easily. My dream is to add a giant whirlpool tub to my home, so I can actually lounge and stretch out in the tub.

As far as showers go (which was OP's original intent), I shower once a day, when I first wake up. My body produces natural oils faster than most people, so I need a daily shower to keep them at bay. I feel really gross if I skip a day.

My wife, on the other hand, showers once every other day. She says her skin and hair dry out when she showers daily, so she needs the break. She gets split ends in her hair easily.

We're actually both retired at the moment, so we don't have to get up and go anywhere first thing in the morning. So I need to remind my wife to shower every few days. If not, she'll easily go 3-4 days without it, and then she becomes a "swamp monster." (Her words, not mine)

Once a day after work, weekends in the morning

Australia here so, it gets hot, couldn’t imagine going a day without showering

In the winter, probably once a week. Unless I do something strenuous, then it would be once I get back home

Summer time, mostly daily.

I shower once per day in the evening, except when I come home very late because of a party or something.

Coming home late and not showering, at least with me, only when I'm drunk enough.

I mean, I'm not against the idea, but I don't want to disturb those who are sleeping.

In my case I wouldn't have any discomfort, it would just be a physical disability hahahaha

When I was younger and much more active, I was a shower every day person. Now that I’m older, I find every other day or three to be good for my skin. I’ve always had a very ruddy complexion, but I’ve figured out that on days I don’t shower, my skin looks its best. So I try to go as long as I can before my armpits start smelling. When I first started skipping days, my scalp would get oily quick, but now my second day hair is pretty nice too (probably also thanks to going with a silicon free conditioner). Basically I just try to shower when I smell or have been sweaty.

Once in the morning and anytime after doing something that makes me sweat.

every season except summer i shower once per day in the morning, unless i'm going to a party or something, then i'll take another before that
in summer i shower twice per day, sometimes 3, just to get the sweat off
i don't deal with heat well lol

Florida here.

Once a day in the evening, unless I really get sweaty in the day (yardwork or hot yoga) then twice but soap (not everywhere) once a day, shampoo about twice a week, but rinse, conditioner, and restyle hair most days.

Husband washes like OP, in the morning before work and in the evening too. It's hot here.

Two a day. Sometimes 3 if I have an evening event.

I also go in our hot tub almost every night.

The second shower is usually more of a rinse unless it was a long/sweaty day

Hot tubs are effectively just people soup. I find them so disgusting.

Ah, so you don't like swimming pools either then?

Kinda but it's much less of a concern for me as all surfaces can be cleaned but with hot tubs they often have pipes that cycle the water that never get a scrub.

Interesting. Swimming pools also have pipes that cycle water. And ideally you are keeping the water maintained and doing regular deep cleans of the tub anyways

It's not binary of has pipes or not and cycles water or not. It's the amount of it as well as the use of hot water. I don't know if this is just personal experience but hot water is a much better solvent than cold water and a pool has a lot more water while a hot tub has quite a minuscule amount of water that is circulated quite quickly.

Really it's not that big of a deal and I'm not saying it's unhealthy but just how I find them to be disgusting.

I'm an oily mofo. 2 a day minimum. I love my shower time!

Once a day before going to bed. I work in an office with AC, but if I did physical labor I'd probably also shower as soon as I got home.

On hot summer nights I also shower in the morning before going to work.

I'm also an evening showerer. I don't know how people navigate the world all day, participate in traffic, be in dusty wind, cook, etc and then get in their bed and sleep comfortably.

Once a week, whether I need it or not.

It would be interesting to see how shower use correlates with water temperature. It feels like that correlation would be negative and usage of showers is premised on the existence of cheap energy, AKA fossil fuels.

I would suspect a correlation more with climate. If it's temperate, you don't shower as much as when you're hot and sweaty all the time.

Also, geothermal power exists.

I was gonna say with the prevelance of air conditioning. In warmer places that have ample water supply but little AC, i would expect more showers as people sweat throughout the day and don't want to be stinky.

I shower once a day in the morning, but i almost never sweat because im almost always in the AC.

One a day in the winter, I try and time it for after I work out, otherwise it ends up being two showers, same if I have to do a lot of jobs round the house.

Two a day in the summer with the second shower being cold/cool water at night before bed. There is zero chance I want to get into a clean bed being all sticky and sweaty, and zero chance I go anywhere in the morning without a shower.

1 + 1 after heavy exercise

In winter I might skip a day here or there, as it can help dry skin.

I used to do it right before work so I was nice and fresh for work, no I'm wfh and I do it after I finish work as an end of day barrier.

Twice. I am not a healthy human so I try and play on the cleaner side of life because getting sick is kinda easy and sucks a little extra like that.

Environmental guilt keeps them at seven minutes each average (yeah, I timed them. I don't even remember why, but that guilt seems viable enough)

Occasionally when the youtube hits just right the night time shower can be 15 minutes. Or it is complex grooming day and not just a shave or something.

Take your showers as you please. It is not you but corporations that are destroying water sources.

I take as long and as hot of showers as I can because I know in 10-20 years, that will be a luxury. I also know that it's pointless for me to try to conserve. If me, all my neighbors, all my neighbors' neighbors, and everyone all of us knows made a pledge to use as little water as we could, it would be insignificant in the face of inefficient agriculture and corporate greed. Every one here could use over 50 gallons of water a day and it would still be absolutely miniscule compared to industrial use.

Anyone saying that water conservation should happen on an individual level is smoking some corporate BS. On an individual basis, there is enough water for everyone to live like a watery nymph if they choose to. It's corporations that are overwhelmingly sucking up the supply.

So take your time in the shower. Don't stress about frivolous uses right now. They won't be around forever and taking advantage of them presently won't do diddly to stop the future.

It's amazing, if you live in super rainy areas water isn't an issue. Probably never will be, at least in my lifetime. I only take 2-3 showers a week though. Showers irritate my skin.

Typically once every other day, depending. I spend most of my average work week inside at home, and my very thin hair responds much better when I only wash it every 2-3 days. If I'm going out or otherwise get dirty/smelly, it's cleaning time regardless.

Usually one in the morning. Once in a while another one if I get too sweaty or dirty.

Depends on the season. I will shower in the mornings and after my swim and again maybe before bed on a hot 40C January day. I might shower one in three on cold June winter holidays when I am home 24/7.

Shower once a day. Sometimes I'll skip a day if I didn't do a lot or get really sweaty.

2-4. One longer one in the morning for cleaning myself. A 2-3 minute one when I workout or get sweaty. And a final short one before climbing into bed.

Sometimes I just decide I need to destress and take another 10-15 minute long one. If I have an easily accessible sauna at a knobs turn then you bet I'll be using it.

1 before bed. If I’m trying to conserve water I might only do it on days I workout - so every other day before bed.

Every other day, but sometimes more often depending on what I've been up to

Do you skip days for practical reasons or is it a personal choice? I don’t understand willingly not cleaning daily tbh.

It's not good for your hair, you can wear a haircap, but most men wouldn't.

Isn’t that the shampoo that’s the issue? It’s possible to shower/bathe without shampoo.

Shampoo makes it worse, by far. Depending on the shampoo, you should really only use it like once or twice a week, and that's if you like shampoo. It's pretty much optional, hence the new "no poo" movement.

Any old water will remove the healthy sebum oils that you want protecting your hair. Depending on the type of hair, and personal factors, you should only be washing your hair a couple times a week. Basically once it starts to feel dirty or unclean, wash it, otherwise leave it alone.

Water is really good at cleaning. People don't realize that washing your hands with water alone will kill a lot of bacteria, and remove the vast majority of dirt and grime. Obviously please don't give up soap... especially for your hands, just trying to illustrate how effective water is at removing things, even things it's normally not known to mix very well with (oils).

Don’t worry, I have no intention of ceasing my soap usage.

They don’t really call it “no poo”? Silliest name possibly lmao

I’m already on the “shampoo every couple/few days as needed” train, but the keeping the hair entirely dry is admittedly new to me.

A bit of both. It dries out your skin to shower every day, and I honestly don't feel like I need to shower every day with not-particularly-active lifestyle. Saves water and electric, as well, but not enough for that to be the reason why.

Once a day, I feel like trash if I even skip one day.

Tho honestly I often wonder if twice a day is optimal. I always feel great the few times I take it twice, but when I only take it once, I always wake up wanting to shower immediately to get the oil off.

I take 4 showers per day if i am going out for work and if i stay at home only 2, morning and in night and before going to bed.

Two at minimum, one in the morning, one at night. If I am nasty and gross from doing something, more.

A shower every couple of days. I'm on well water in a pretty nasty drought so I try to save what water I can.

Twice a day normally. 1 morning, 1 after work if im dirty, sweaty or stinky.

One morning shower but we don't have hot climate here.

In the hottest part of summer, morning and night, but the rest of the year is every day I work out or every other day.

I take a shower in the morning if I work out, and I always take one at night. So like 1.5 times a day.

Depends on the time of the year,

During the summer I’d have one before and after work, during winter once a day or once every two days

At the moment, none, because I’m not able to - having to keep myself clean with basically just a basin and soap. Usually, somewhere between 0.25 and 0.5 a day. I don’t really get particularly dirty or sweaty. If I did get particularly dirty/sweaty then I’d just shower ASAP.

Since starting fall quarter of college, every day I have to go. And on Fridays if I have something like a doctor's appointment that day.

On days I leave the house, I shower once in the morning. That used to be 5-6 times per week, but since COVID I’ve been working from home, so that number is 1-2. I’ll also shower after swimming or strenuous exercise, though that’s rare for me.

Gas ain't cheap here. I bath once or twice a week, but i'll have a quick shower once a day (unless I bathe)

1 more...

One. Maybe one every other day depending on what I'm doing.

Once in a while twice in a day again depending on what I'm doing.

Baths? Zero. Can't remember the last year I laid in a tub. Not even sure the last decade.

How often do to clean my body? Daily, via a shower. If it's a day off I might skip a day.

I live on an island in the Mediterranean sea where it's really hot so I shower at least once a day and usually before I go to bed. When I used to live in Manchester I would shower every other day

I shower twice a day and my friends said they only shower once a day (I have to wonder if it's due to their conditioners and perfumes)

the times I've switched to showering once a day or every other day is when there was water shortages and droughts happening here

plus I like my showers to destress after a long day :)

Live in Germany but originally come from the Failed States of America. I normally shower twice daily, unless I'm staying in the apartment all day and not going anywhere then I can do once. Do not have a bath tub, probably wouldn't use it much if at all if I had one

Basically my routine. If I have to stay at home all day, I'll only take one, but that's rare.
