What discontinued foods do you miss?

About 6-8 years ago, McDonald's had a line of like, "gourmet" burgers that came with grilled onions on them and big leafs of Romaine lettuce, those things were delicious but they discontinued them after only like, six months. For a while afterward I would order grilled onions on a regular quarter pounder but one day they said they didn't do that anymore either.

I'm still not over Taco Bell discontinuing the Quesarito. One day when I tried to order it, they told me you could only get it through the app anymore, but I hate installing apps for every little thing so I didn't bother. I occasionally ordered through the website and was able to get it there but it eventually disappeared altogether.

Then one day I spotted the chipotle ranch grilled chicken burrito on the value menu and I got hooked on those, but that also disappeared recently. The chicken enchilada burrito that replaced it is a banger, though, and surprisingly cheap.

And before anyone calls me a shill, I'll say I fucking hate how everything else on their menu is now like $6 or more unless you order it as a combo.

IMO, combos shouldn't be more than 20% cheaper than ordering items a la carte. Like, it shouldn't be legal to price things that way. It's just ridiculous that you get ripped off unless you order like, 500 more calories worth of food than you should really be eating in a single meal.

The chicken enchilada combo box is fucking stupid because of how much food comes in it, and the stacker taco is garbage. They stuff that thing with so many stale, rock hard chips that it's like eating glass.

IMO, combos shouldn’t be more than 20% cheaper than ordering items a la carte. Like, it shouldn’t be legal to price things that way. It’s just ridiculous that you get ripped off unless you order like, 500 more calories worth of food than you should really be eating in a single meal.

Around July last year my local Taco Bell was selling the Chalupa Cravings Box for $5, purchasing the items separately was $12.47 before tax.

  • Chalupa Supreme - $4.79
  • Beefy 5-Layer Burrito - $3.99
  • Crunchy Taco - $1.69
  • Cinnamon Twists - $1.00
  • Medium drink - $1.00

And right now I can order a Cheesy Bean & Rice burrito:

  • Beans
  • Seasoned Rice
  • Creamy jalapeno sauce
  • Nacho cheese sauce

=420 calories, $1.49

But a Bean burrito:

  • Beans
  • Cheese
  • Onions
  • Red sauce

=360 calories, $2.19

But you can add the onions and red sauce to any menu item for free...why the $.70 difference? Adding seasoned rice is $.30, nacho cheese sauce is $.69, creamy jalapeno sauce is $.19 -- I really don't understand how they arrive at the prices for their menu items at all.

About 6-8 years ago, McDonald's had a line of like, "gourmet" burgers that came with grilled onions on them and big leafs of Romaine lettuce, those things were delicious but they discontinued them after only like, six months.

I’m old enough to remember the first “adult” burger McDonald’s launched, the Arch Deluxe. It came on a potato bun and had a stone ground mustard that was delicious. They had a huge marketing push for it, but then gave up before it had a chance to really catch on. I thought it was really good (for McDonald’s), but they didn’t really give it time.

The Arch Deluxe was so goddamn good. When it first came out I would walk to McD's with my sister like twice a week to get one. We weren't a fast food family but that was just too good to pass up. It's a good thing I was in high school with a young person's metabolism then!

Getting rid of the quesorito really makes no sense to me, for me it was easily the best thing on the menu and I ended up not really going to Taco Bell anymore after they got rid of it

I figured it was to bait people to install the app. Then when sales of the item dropped, they went "welp, guess people don't want it anymore," and discontinued it.

I eventually started making my own quesaritos. The only tortillas I found that are big enough are Old El Paso Grande, but they scratch the itch for me.

The black bean quesorito was my favorite. I even (regrettably) installed the app for it. I've since abandoned it, there's just no reason for me to use it anymore.

A few years ago, Morningstar used to have a vegetarian rib patty. Once I realized its potential as a vegetarian McRib, I bought a pack. It was delicious. I bought another pack.

And then it was gone from shelves in every store that had it.

Yeah another morningstar rib fan!! Maybe we need to band together and petition to get these back

I just found their replacement in store. Check out my other comment below.

Yes!! Riblets! I haven't seen them anywhere in years and I miss them so much :(

They’re (kinda) back!! I haven’t tried them yet, but I will.

They’re (kinda) back!!

Yes thank you for finding this!! Now I have to hunt them down

Keebler Pizzarias. They had 3 flavours IIRC, the Pepperoni was my favourite, I used to inhale those things

Those look like pepperoni sliced into chip shape.. which I guess is technically pizza flavored.. :p

Big Ed's Super Saucer

They were at least twice as big as the current brands (the most prominent being ugh Nestlé) of pre-made ice cream cookie sandwiches, and were only around a dollar or two. Not to mention 10 times tastier.

I miss them. I miss them so fucking much... 😖

Learning how they operated the business while trying to figure out why they suddenly stopped being sold around me, it makes sense. They just relied on word of mouth while also changing the areas they serviced making it difficult to actually acquire product.

You could try these, if they're available in your area, seems pretty similar and I always liked em.

Affordable fresh fruit

Thankfully I wash all of my fruits and vegetables prior to consumption, because basically everything I like to eat has been making the top 12
The Dirty Dozen

Why are hot peppers part of #9? Didn't they evolve to be hot to naturally fend off pests?

Where I live, aphids and mites are the biggest pests, but for home gardeners we can just pick them off, or use ladybugs if it gets really bad

I've never seen anyone bring it up, so there's probably no chance it ever gets brought back. How come banana ice cream is so uncommon? It's the obvious secret fourth flavor, and this one was good. Why do we live on hellworld?

Same with banana yoghurt. You rarely see it, no idea why because it's yummy.

I have both banana ice cream and banana yogurt in my kitchen right now! They are all HEB brand though so maybe it's more of a Texan thing

1 more...

Banana ice cream is the best and I don't like other crap added to it. Which eliminates the Ben and Jerry's flavor. Fortunately, there is a small local ice cream maker that sells pints. Cold Stone Creamery is the other option.

Publix has a similar product and holy shit it's delicious

SoBe

Hell yeah. In the glass bottles.

The glass bottles with the notxh in the bottom to smoke weed out of?

I still miss the carrot flavor.

Orange Carrot Elixir. I prefered the Grapefruit Elixir but that one was good too.

Pop Tarts. They still make them but the ingredients have changed and the quality declined so significantly that they are a different product than they used to be.

I haven't had them for many years, so don't know what if anything might have changed, but I'd point out that there are a lot of companies that make competing...I think they're called "toaster pastries".

Maybe try one of them, see if they work? They should ship pretty easily, so even if a local grocery store don't have 'em where you are, I bet that they can be ordered.

googles

Yeah:

https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/off-brand-pop-tarts/

Interesting, thanks! I've tried a few other kinds but so far nothing is really even close.

My mother stocked up on the frosted grape ones when they became hard to find a while ago

  • Pepsi Kona
  • McDonald's Arch Deluxe
  • Orbitz (always thought it was gross but it looked fucking cool)

I bought a case of Orbitz drinks around the time they stopped making them. I drank most of them over the following year or so, but I still have one left. The colors are faded, but the little gel bits are still floating around.

Orbitz were great

  • McDonald's Arch Deluxe

I thought I was the only one... I used to love that sandwich back in the day.

  • Shark Bites fruit snacks
  • Santa Fe Chicken Chalupas from Taco Bell
  • Squeezit fruit drinks
  • Mad Dawg fizzy bubble gum

EDIT: There used to be this brand of pickled prawns in a jar you could get at the super markets here. You can't find them any more, but the brand name escapes me. I miss those.

EDIT 2: Nate's Spiced Prawns.

I Googled Shark Bites and got this super duper amazingly helpful answer:

Are shark bites still around? There were 69 unprovoked shark attacks in 2023, higher than the five-year average of 63 attacks per year, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File. Ten of the attacks in 2023 proved fatal, up from five the year before, researchers said.

Thanks, Google.

I'm willing to bet 99.9% of people making that search want that answer, even as bad as that search would be worded for that.

Lots of chip flavors. In the UK and probably other countries Frito-Lay makes a Thai Sweet Chili kettle chip under the Sensations sub-brand. They sold it in the U.S. too but dropped the whole Sensations line after the corn chip side did not do well at the same time as Sun Chips were growing (used the same production lines). Hal’s of New York does a really good version of this but I only see them at one hotel I often stop at in Albany.

Later they had a white cheddar and cracked peppercorn flavor, also a kettle chip but with a cut that made it more like Ruffles. Fantastic chip, but gone.

When I was a kid I remember a brand called O’Boise’s. I think it was connected to Keebler. The sour cream and onion was really good. Schlotzsky’s sour cream and onion chips are extremely similar.

Panera used to use chips from a brand called Krunchers. Panera only had the plain kettle chips, but in grocery stores they had a lot of good flavors. Haven’t seen those in years. Now Panera’s chips are private labeled, but taste the same.

Lays is called Walkers in the UK and the Sensations brand is still sold.

Here there are in my local supermarket. Personally I prefer the Sensation Thai Sweet Chilli nuts, they are the perfect thing while you wait for food to cook on the BBQ.

Yes, sorry if I wasn’t clear; it’s only been discontinued in the U.S. as far as I know. Perhaps Canada also; I haven’t seen them there but I don’t know if they had them in the first place.

I miss bbq walkers that came in a black bag. They stopped them decades ago and the last bag I had was when I was maybe 9.

In the UK and probably other countries Frito-Lay makes a Thai Sweet Chili kettle chip under the Sensations sub-brand.

Looks like it's available in the US from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Sensations-Thai-Sweet-Chilli-Crisps/dp/B075CPY9DM/

Yeah, you can find gray market imports of the Walker’s Sensations from the UK, but it’s not as convenient or cost-effective as finding them at your local store. I get them occasionally and save them for a lunch treat.

Damn I was gonna suggest Hardbite Sweet Ghost Pepper if you like the sweet Thai chili but I think Hardbite is only Canadian.

Never heard of it but I’ll see if I can find it next time we visit my wife’s parents in Quebec

I submit the following:

Both of these RULED and I miss them dearly.

PB Max

Good lord these things were an 11/10. The peanut butter was god-like.

Reese's used to have an "Elvis" Reese's peanut butter cup that had a layer of banana cream in them and they were FIRE and I think about them at least 5 times a year.

I wish I could go back to before I read this comment so I didn't know what I was missing.

DNL - 7up with a twist! Flipped upside down. Instead of lemon lime, it was lime lemon and was actually pretty good. The company discontinued it and I hate them for it. I still get 7 up here and there but dnL was the best.

I thought dnL was a marketing tactic and was the same thing as 7up. I didn’t realize they were different flavors.

Hostess Pudding Pies 🤤

Delicious, but I can imagine that a lot of people saw that picture and thought “Ima pass on the spunk filled dookie”

I liked the Ninja Turtles ones with the green vanilla pudding in the middle.

From the late 80's, PB Max

Fucking GREAT candy bar killed off because apparently the Mars family doesn't like peanut butter.

Tostinos used to have a pizza called "zesty italian". It was the best pizza there was. A Lil spicy with Canadian bacon, pepperoni, fennel, and Italian sausage.

I have spent 25 years missing those things.

Crystal Clear Pepsi. I don't drink soda anymore, but when I was a kid that was my crack!

I remember they brought it back for a limited time for a bit, but sadly it's now gone.

I remember not liking Crystal Clear Pepsi because it didn't taste as good as regular Pepsi, but everyone was so stoked about it that I was afraid to say anything and look uncool haha

Full-sugar Coca-Cola Vanilla. Was a bit of a hit in the UK in 2000s, was revived in 2013, then discontinued in favour of their aspartame-filled mess. I tried the "zero sugar" variant and it just tasted like cheap cola with a hint of vanilla. I've since gone for Tim Hortons' French Vanilla since they started expanding here.

Hmm. Maybe get non-vanilla cola plus eyedropper bottle of vanilla extract?

Y'all have the cherry vanilla cokes that I love over there. Once in a while I find the exported version for a ridiculous price here and pick it up.

But yeah like someone else said, just add vanilla flavouring to your regular coke, it takes a bit to find the balance but it's doable.

Cherry vanilla? I thought that was American! Haven't had it in a while since the importers don't have 'em in stock.

Ooo idk the ones I always see here in Canada have a pound sticker on them so I imagine they're from the UK somewhere.

What brand, if I can ask? Over in the UK I've only seen Dr. Pepper USA do cherry vanilla, which is different to Coca-Cola's Dr. Pepper that uses aspartame and sugar. (US Dr. Pepper uses HFCS) UK Dr. Pepper was way too strong with the sugar but with the aspartame it just tastes watery and dead.

Just coca cola cherry vanilla. Ive seen only like cream soda dr pepper here but I don't like dr pepper.

In the US, Zevia recently came out with Vanilla Cola and it tastes really awesome to me. It has a bigger vanilla flavor punch than anything Coca-Cola did. I know most people are picky when it comes to sodas especially something that’s flavored with stevia instead of sugar. If you can get over the stevia bit, it’s worth trying. Much better tasting than Vanilla Coke Zero.

Zevia is quite tricky to get in the UK (not seeing any Vanilla Cola imported here) but if I see an opportunity to get it imported, I'll go for it.

Tangentially related, Amazon has a lot of Green Cola, don't know if that's a brand people know or not but they claim to use stevia as well. Edit: Green Cola does contain sucralose so if you're trying to skip that one too, keep that in mind.

Bugles. They stopped selling them in Canada a couple years ago, and they were great for Christmas.

Allow me to introduce you to Smash! They're basically chocolate covered Bugles and they're amazing. Very popular in Scandinavia. Smash

They still sell these in the UK and in europe if you want some enough to import. Bugles are S tier. One of my top crisps/chips

Coke Black, Altoids sours

I found a replica of Altoids sours on Etsy that are pretty good

In Germany we had a joghurt back in the 90s called "Frufo" (a portmanteau of Frucht (fruit) and UFO), which was basically just a strawberry joghurt in a flat, round package with a hole in the middle for a small toy. They even released pralines, which were filled with the same joghurt and were pure delish, especially cold out of the fridge on a hot summer day.

Everywhere I go, people my age miss that. It just needs the question "Hey, remember Frufo?" to send them to memory lane :)

For me it’s the miracoli pasta sets we could buy here when I was a kid. I have plenty fond memories of that stuff when I was little, but as it turns out they don’t make them any more because it’s more profitable to sell the Sauce alone… not to mention the other flavors like the cheese and herb farfalle pasta they used to have :(

But they actually do! Or I had luck and got a limited edition from kaufland just yesterday. You should go and check out if they are still available :)

😳 i shop at Kaufland frequently, I’ll definitely have a thorough look next time was sure they had only the sauce in jars.

The original Mountain Dew Fruit Punch Kickstart

Snackwraps from McDonalds. BKs version just isn't the same.

Kudos bars.

Hot warheads.

Sour warheads are great and all, but I really loved the hot ones.

Man, I can barely even find evidence that they once existed. Like I'm being gaslit by Big Candy.

This is probably going to show my age, but I miss OK Soda, Josta, Cool Britania ice cream, and Salsa Rio Doritos.

1-800-IFEELOK

I remember people arguing about the flavor and the rumor was that it was made from varying mixes of leftover (or line switching) soda so each batch was always a little different.

EDIT: I have no idea what that phone number connects to now, probably don't call it!

Coincidentally I was listening to a podcast the other week that did an episode on OK Soda. Apparently they did base the flavor on a suicide. So I guess they would have used a blend of flavors they already had on hand. It was actually kind of validating because I've been telling people that for years after I made something that tasted extremely close at a Subway once back in the day. You need a soda fountain that has orange, iced tea, and pink lemonade along with the regular soda flavors to do it.

And yeah, I also used to call that number all the time.

I remember kids in my school saying it was a mixture of Coke and Sprite

Cool Brittania was my all time favorite Ben & Jerry's flavor. I'd fill my freezer with it if they ever brought it back.

McDonald's McWrap. Though I hate McDonald's and don't support them now, those McWraps were pretty good.

Me too! They were my favorite thing at McDonald’s and now that they’re gone I have no desire to go back.

Was that the Snack Wrap? I remember them being pretty good.

Yep it was wrapped in some kind of tortilla thing, had your veggies and chicken or something inside. Pretty good

Eggo Waf-Fulls. These things had an incredibly good filling in them that made for a decent breakfast on those mornings I'd oversleep and needed a quick bite.

I wonder if you could recreate them with a waffle iron and strawberry pie filling...

The Double Decker taco from Taco Bell.

I think I just got one a few days ago of the value menu? It had nacho cheese between the soft and hard shells.

Orbitz drink. The weird one that was at the 99¢ store that had the little gel balls

There was a short boom of all different kinds of Fassbrause here in Germany. Fassbrause is a carbonated drink, that gets its carbonation from brewing, is made of grain malt and fruits and non-alcoholic (literally barrel-fizz).

It was then followed by a short trend of every rapper and streamer making their own iced tea and now the trend still going on is energy drinks.

I miss the selection of Fassbrause. It was not to sweet, malty and fruity, just perfect. Now I have to look for what feels like the two last brands still producing.

O'Grady's Au Gratin potato chips. It was when they stopped being sold that the world really started going to shit.

googles

https://www.newsweek.com/chips-no-longer-sold-potato-corn-snacks-america-planters-tators-doritos-wow-cheetos-checkers-1647139

These extra-thick ridged potato chips promised a stronger potato taste than other chips, and came in two flavours: plain and the cheesy au gratin.

O'Grady's were a big hit in the 1980s but were discontinued by the '90s.

Still crave them? Fans often suggest Ruffles Extra Thick cheddar chips are a near duplicate.

I've never seen Ruffles Extra Thick anything before, and a quick search of Amazon doesn't give me any results.

The S'mores cereal that was like golden grams. Had it in the 80s, it was the best.

Malt-o-meal makes a smores cereal, not sure if it's the same, but I enjoy it.

I miss the pretzel snack „snyders of Hannover“ here in Germany… they discontinued them not too lang ago because of some new regulations 😢

US Amazon.com might ship to Germany, but I would assume that shipping fees would be exorbitant.

googles

When I bounce through an EU web proxy, they at least let me see the products. I don't know if that means that they'll let you order.

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=snyder's+of+hanover

Honestly, though, their shtick is that they do German-style pretzels. Not that I have anything against Snyder's, but I'd think that if there's anywhere in the world that one could probably get similar pretzels from another source, it'd be in Germany.

I tried all similar products from other brands I could find, but none were as good as snyders. Some were even quite disgusting, even though they are produced by reputable brands

As a Philadelphian who has tried every type of pretzel I could get my hands on, I can confirm that no other pretzels come close to Snyder's of Hanover. Rold Gold are crap and taste like fake butter that has been burned.

I was quite fond of Altoids sours and cherry vanilla coke. Though I don't miss the latter much because I'm not much of a soda drinker anymore and those mix in fountain drink dispensers exist now. Still a fiend for mints though.

I sometimes find cherry vanilla imported from the UK. Usually in the summertime. I'm glad they made cherry cokes a more permanent thing now though.

Those cheesecake bars made by Philadelphia cream cheese.

The Mickey and friends popsicles

Ice cream bin bons.

The fruit snack variety boxes you could get from Price club. I think it came with 4, Garfield and Odie, Dinosaurs, Airplanes/fighter jets, and I wanna say the last one was unicorns?

Mountain dew live wire

googles

This says that they restarted production, if you're in the US.

https://mountaindew.fandom.com/wiki/LiveWire

Current Status: United States, New Zealand, and Australia: Permanent Flavor

Year(s) Available: United States: 2003, 2004, 2005 - Present

LiveWire is a Mountain Dew flavor released in stores in the summertime in 2003, 2004, and then 2005 for a limited time in the United States. During its release, it proved to be massively successful. This introduction alone increased overall Mountain Dew sales by 10% in its first year, eventually making LiveWire a permanent flavor after its 2005 limited-time run.

Walmart says that they stock and can ship it:

https://www.walmart.com/search?q=Livewire

Might just be that it's not showing up in local stores near you.

Interesting, I don't see it sold in stores anywhere. I'll need to look for this.

In the 90s, the local Taco Bells in Portland had a menu item called "Mexi-nuggets" which were a Mexican spiced tater tot. In the combo meals, they filled the role of fries like you get in your burger combo (like the two tacos and Mexi-nugget combo)

I was quite surprised to find out the stores in Washington didn't sell them, and instead of Mexi-nuggets, the combos just had... Another taco.

They were delicious, and I still think about them

Have you ever had Potato Ole's?

If drinks count, I miss Snapple's Root Beer. That shit had more bite than a German shepherd.

I remember Snapple having a fairly impressive variety of flavors back in the day... Nothing like it is today...and a bit later, all those caps with the free subscription to WebTV lol

Was the root beer clear?

Yes it was!

Nice!! I do remember correctly, then. That was the first time i saw clear root beer...I was intrigued! It was very tasty, that much i definitely remember!

Interesting fact, the reason some root beers have "bite" is due to them having caffeine. Most root beers do not have caffeine and since caffeine has a natural bitter taste, it makes those root beers sharper. At least this was the case for Barq's.

The original Alphabet cereal. Not this sugar coated crap they sell nowadays.

Also, C-3PO cereal from the 80s. I can't say I've ever found anything that tastes the same.

Wanted to recommend Nestle Trio as they are identical to the C-3PO cereals, only to find out they've been discontinued as well. Shame.

Bassett's Wine Gums. After Eight. Had they only been discontinued, I would be almost fine with it. But the packages are still in the stores, filled with off-brand weak copies of the original products. Fuck Mondelez and Nestlé and everything they stand for. Not just because of this, but especially because of this.

Sobe Citrus Energy. If it still exists, it's not where I live anymore and I can't mail order it.

I miss Kmart and Kmart's Smart Sense low calorie lemonades: https://i.imgur.com/W0DzcZS.jpeg

They tasted so.. weird.. but man I loved em. We bought all of them when stores were closing. Still have a few in the garage for rainy days.

Maruchan Jalapeno Cheddar Instant Lunch

QFC used to make seltzer water flavored like root beer, Dr. Pepper (it was called "Hint of the Doctor Flavor which is downright hilarious), and cola. The product line was discontinued due to lack of popularity and I miss it every day.

I wish that some of these manufacturers would bring back product and sell it online. There's gotta be room for products that have enough global popularity to support a market, even if no one local grocery store does enough business to make it worthwhile.

Walmart does an IMHO pretty good pretty good delivery-to-door service that leverages their existing logistics network. Amazon does groceries if one buys Amazon Prime.

I regularly get Diet Dr. Pepper delivered by Walmart, which I would have thought would be impossible to do economically -- it's heavy and low-value and they only charge a fixed shipping fee, no matter how much you get -- but apparently they can do it. They have to at least have the ability to get it to their store, so...shrugs. And beyond that, they can do delivery-to-store service, so if they have a guaranteed sale and someone just wants to pick it up, I'd think that they could swing that for products that only have limited demand.

Brisk fruit punch and sidekicks garlic alfredo spaghetti. Sad days when those were discontinued

The sidekicks garlic alfredo is still sold at walmart, I have some in my cupboard currently.

Brisk fruit punch

hits Google Shopping

Looks like it's available.

https://www.google.com/search?tbm=shop&hl=en-US&psb=1&q=brisk+fruit+punch

The Sidekick's garlic alfredo is apparently still available in Canada, and one can order from there via various vendors that import it, if you're in the US:

https://www.amazon.com/Knorr-Tomato-Alfredo-Dishes-5-3oz/dp/B00IHRSK8C/

I am in Canada, the Brisk Fruit Punch flavour was discontinued here. I guess it could be possible to import it if its still available in the US. I quite liked it, though not sure I liked it enough to pay the import and shipping fees Canadians are slapped with.. Maybe I'll order it once just to relive my college days once again haha

As for the sidekicks alfredo, I was talking about specifically their garlic alfredo spaghetti. They have a couple other alfredo packets that are fairly different to the one I am talking about. None of them were ever quite the same!

Honestly, while there would be shipping fees, I don't think that either we guys or you guys pay any import tariffs because of NAFTA USMCA.

googles

https://www.international.gc.ca/trade-commerce/trade-agreements-accords-commerciaux/agr-acc/nafta-alena/fta-ale/questions.aspx?lang=eng#5

The phase-out of FTA tariffs was completed on January 1, 1998. As of that date, virtually all tariffs on Canada- U.S. trade in originating goods were eliminated. Some tariffs remain in place for certain products in Canada's supply-managed sectors (e.g. eggs, dairy and poultry products). In the U.S., tariffs remain in place for certain products such as sugar, dairy, peanut and cotton.

I don't usually consciously order from Canada, but I remember ordering some unfinished cedar furniture from Canada and it cost less than getting it in the US.

As for the sidekicks alfredo, I was talking about specifically their garlic alfredo spaghetti.

Ah, gotcha, sorry about that. You did indeed specify spaghetti in your comment, and I just didn't read carefully enough.

Morton Mini Donuts, covered in sugar n cinnamon. Pop in the oven, crisp and hot. Haven't seen them since the mid 80s. Sad

Taco viva closed around me 30 years ago. God damn I miss the Wet Burrito they served.

Quaker Crunchy Corn Bran was a cereal that had a terrible name, but was SO yummy. Puffins are similar, but not quite right.

Ocean Spray made a Cranberry Key Lime cocktail for a very short while and I loved it.

Eggo used to make a Nutragrain version, and since I only eat toaster waffles with peanut butter and syrup, I couldn't taste the difference and it made for a healthier breakfast.

I have nostalgia for things like Clearly Canadian and Orbitz, but pretty sure I wouldn't actually like them anymore.

I recently found Clearly Canadian in a grocery store and bought one on a whim. It tasted the way I remembered it.

There was a sort of yogurt cup that was very spongy, not quite cheese cake thick but close. It was delicious and i forgot what it's called.

Looked it up just now and it might be the Yoplait Whips, but the container is different from what i remember (obv they changed it like all others).

I don't think i could find that in a local store though

Monster has a line of canned coffee-like products they call their Java series. One of them was Swiss Chocolate flavored. It is discontinued, always separated, left an awful sludge in the bottom of the can, but I loved those things.

They only answer I'd ever give.

Buitoni Instant Pizza

I don’t know if it’s discontinued or not sold in the US anymore, but there used to be this European cereal called Pocketini that was square’s filled with chocolate. Kellogg'scame out with cheap rip off that had much less and waxy tasting chocolate and smaller squares that just sucks.

I swear I just saw this in a Binging with Babish video where he ranks all the cereals

Wow. Hasn’t heard of that. But if you ever see Krave in the US, avoid it.

I'll be honest, I've never been more tempted to try Krave in my life

Krave in the US is about the guiltiest treat ever, but it tastes amazing.

1 more...

When I was a super young kid, I remember going to the store occasionally, where my mom would rarely buy me these yogurt gummy candies as a treat. I absolutely loved them, they were delicious. However, they were discontinued or something like 20 years ago. There isn’t much I wouldn’t do to get more of them. I’d even make them myself if I could find a recipe.

I think the brand name was Campinos. IIRC they were mostly a hard candy brand, but those soft candies were a million times better than any other candy I could have had as a kid.

Edit: I just googled them since they were on my mind. It seems like they’re out of stock everywhere but here’s a product listing https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/campino-yogourt-gummies-120g/10192347

Are those the ones with little fruit gummy balls coated in yogurt?

Nope, they were regular gummy candy but with yogurt mixed in to the molten candy mixture before it set (I think). They were kinda similar to the white stuff on the bottom of the blue whale gummy candies but not quite.

On that note, I also remember yogurt coated skittles were a thing and they were also very good, but I think those were also discontinued. Those are probably more like what you’re thinking of.

out of stock everywhere

Whenever you can't find something esoteric, use Google Shopping. They index about a zillion different online retailers. If you can't find something there, you can't get it online.

https://www.google.com/search?tbm=shop&q=campino+candy

Here's my first hit:

https://www.germanshop24.com/sweets/chewies-and-caramels/storck-campino-fruits-11.5-oz/?gad_source=4

Availability: In stock

EDIT: Note that the shipping is exorbitant, though. I'd guess that they're shipping from Germany.

Amazon has it for less from another European food importer:

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately the ones you linked aren’t actually the same product as mine - those are hard candies and they don’t seem to have yogurt in them. The tip about google shopping is still valid though. I’ll have a look later.

Quaker corn bean crunch

It was always a favorite cereal but always super expensive compared to other cereals so I only bought it occasionally. It got discontinued a few years ago.

Dunkin Donuts movie tie-in drink from Men in Black 3. I think I got one every day for the 3 months it existed.

I’d say Planter’s Cheez Balls and lime green skittles, but people wised up and brought those back recently.

I was going to say Snapple Elements, but apparently they're back on shelves within the last month.

The original Pizzaria Uno cream of broccoli soup from the 90s. It was maybe the perfect version of that soup.

Screaming Yellow Zonkers. 3D Doritos. Choco Tacos.

Choco Tacos

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choco_Taco

Klondike discontinued the Choco Taco in July 2022.[4] According to an Associated Press fact check, Klondike discontinued the product due to a sharp increase in demand across its brands and to ensure the availability of the remainder of its products.[12] However, Klondike tweeted that "we are discussing next steps, including what to do with the last 912 (we counted) tacos at HQ. Stay tuned…" on July 28, 2022,[13] but have never followed up on this claim.

On July 25, 2022 Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian tweeted at Unilever, offering to buy the rights to the product.[14] When asked about this by Fortune, Ohanian confirmed that the offer was "very serious" but did not yet have any news to share.[15][16]

Well, Reddit is IPOing right now, so if it goes well, maybe he'll bring it back.

EDIT: There's also some guy I remember NPR's Planet Money doing a thing on who brought back Hydrox (the cookie that Oreo was a clone of). The trademark wasn't being defended and the product was abandoned, and it looks like he's still in business. So even if the original manufacturer isn't interested, given capital and determination, it is possible to resurrect products.

Choco Tacos broke my heart. Tacos with tacos for desert was a great joy in life that I have been robbed of.

@Soggy@lemmy.world @Death_Equity@lemmy.world

This site says that a take on it is coming back this summer:

https://www.foodandwine.com/the-choco-taco-is-back-8597598

During Taco Bell’s recent Live Mas Live event, the chain announced a collaboration with Portland-based ice cream maker Salt & Straw, and the two of them have plans to bring a version of the Choco Taco back into our lives.

According to an Instagram post from Salt & Straw, the new version will involve a taco-shaped waffle cone filled with cinnamon ancho ice cream that has been dipped in a single-origin chocolate sauce. Each taco will be served with three different sauces and a cheesecake dip.

"A version of" does not inspire confidence in me. I like Salt & Straw, it's good ice cream. The Choco Taco was not good ice cream. It was a stale sort-of-waffle-cone shell, acceptable vanilla ice cream with fudge swirl, dipped in cheap chocolate with chopped peanuts. And they were perfect. This new thing will probably cost eight dollars and taste great but it will not fill the nostalgic space or my freezer.

Josta 🥰

This was my first thought. Not sure if it is a nostalgia thing or if it was actually good at this point. I did like it a lot back then though.

Josta. Pepsi's first "energy drink" that they released in the mid 90's, made with guarana AND caffeine.

This was back in the days when Pepsi could "sponser" a middle school by putting a branded soda machine in a common area. It's how I ended up drinking grape Fuitopia every day at lunch, and every day I'd get a bottle of Josta for the walk home.

It wasn't immediately palatable. Reminiscent of Moxie but without the waxy aftertaste. It was like drinking carbonated cough syrup. But just like the other energy drinks that would follow a few years later, I really came to appreciate the taste.

It recently popped up in the background of a scene of the first season of Loki which had me hopeful for a revival, but no such luck.

Croissant Pockets. Hot Pockets also had a Beef and Cheddar flavor a long time ago and whatever equivalent they have now is not the same.

Smart Foods also used to have a spicy cheese popcorn but they changed it to an even hotter version. I can barely taste the cheese now. Bring back the original!

Does it count if they still make the product but something changed so it doesn't taste the same anymore? If yes I definitely miss Termix don't know what they did but it's not the same. Also am lactose intolerant so can't really eat it anymore anyway. There's probably more things but this one I remember the most, also Pribináček.

Soylent Green. People have no taste these days.

Devil's Food cake/cookies. Originally they were Nabisco: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/9b/a0/af/9ba0af2803a08d55bdc523ad21648559.jpg The red and yellow box. These were a wonderful memory from my childhood. Then you could only find Snackwell's version. They were like 95% of what I remembered, not exact but so close they were still good. The last box I got (in the before times) tasted absolutely terrible and nothing like they used to. Tasted like dryness and absence of sweetness with no chocolate flavor. Texture wrong, everything wrong. Amazon would not accept my review of the new recipe. I may have compared them to the Devil's butthole. Evidently those are discontinued now. I guess they went the route of making the new recipe so hateful we would celebrate the end of the production.

I'd love to be able to have something that tastes like the original ones though.

Coco Rocks were the best thing ever.

I have also heard good things about Cheese Moments, although I've never experienced them myself

Mountain Dew Throwback. As far as I can tell it hasn't been fully discontinued, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere around me. It used real sugar instead of corn syrup. I hate the basic, corn syrup stuff but thought the throwback stuff tasted pretty good.

Space food sticks!!!!

Me too. I guess if I ever have to go to space I’ll just have to deal with the crumb problem

Limited edition Late Night Jalapeno Popper Doritos. It was a limited run I think, maybe around 2009, 2010? I still miss them.

I don't remember the name but there was an energy bar with the flavor a specific juice that got really popular at some point when I was a kid. I think they suddenly discontinued it due to ingredients causing cancer. I had eaten so much of it that it was a bit worrying.

I swear there was a lollipop brand that looked like chupa chups or chupa chups themselves used to have a different flavor because they were the only lollipops I liked but can't find them anywhere after leaving middle school so I guess they stopped making them.

Chicken flavour Cheetos

What? Those can’t have ever existed, you’ve got to be making that up. You’re pulling my leg, right?!?

Monster assault energy drink, the "new" flavour is a disgusting mockery of the original.

There's a new one?

I think they're both gone now

Pepsi Blue. They brought it back for like a week and it was amazing.

WP says that they still sell it abroad:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepsi_Blue

Pepsi Blue was announced in May 2002.[1] It launched in mid-2002 and discontinued in Canada and the United States in 2004, although it remains available in the Philippines.

I didn't get a hit on Google Shopping (just for expired stuff for that brief time they brought it back in the US a couple of years ago), but you might be able to figure out a way to get ahold of it from the Philippines.

Used to chase black velvet with Pepsi blue in HS. Perfect chaser, annihilated any preceding flavors.

There used to be boxed ice cream with blueberry and egg yolk flavor. Loved it as a kid, got discontinued by the ice cream truck that had it. No replacement found. I probably won't even like it since I have forgotten the taste at this point.

Now and laters had some less common flavors that were soooo good. Cherry Cola 🤤Now it's impossible to find anything outside of the 4-5 flavors in big containers.

Now and laters used to be actually hard when you first put them in your mouth and softened up as you chewed. I know it was terrible for my teeth, but I miss the ultra chewy texture those had dearly.

Now it’s impossible to find anything outside of the 4-5 flavors in big containers.

I see 24-packs of 6-item boxes in single flavors for cherry, blue raspberry, grape, pineapple, apple, tropical punch, banana, watermelon, strawberry, plus "morphs".

Archway Rocky Road cookies. It was their best variety by far, but they discontinued them.

They introduced two new peanut flip flavours. One was Mexican and the other was oriental or something. They kept the Mexican one and ditched the superior oriental for some reason. Still thinking about them from time to time.

Cadburys nuts about caramel. I loved those bars. They must have done them for a few years before they discontinued.

Wildland Aronia Berry Juice Cocktail, from CostCo.

The color was a little purpler than cranberry juice. They replaced it with grape juice, not as good.

Can't find a pic on google. The juice was around in the 90s.

Edit: Bing had one:

It seems this instance very stupidly blocks images from i m g b b so I had to go hunting for another host. Great work admins.

The Doritos frozen Mac N Cheese bites and nacho cheese Pringles Tortillas.

Also most of the Monster Rehabs that don't exist anymore and Rockstar Relax.

Nut fudge clusters from the Neilson candy company.

Nutchos, from before Nestle bought the company, f**ked up the product, and then discontinued them because their f**kery caused their popularity to crash. Apparently there are almond flour chips with the same name now - not talking about those.

R.B. Rice Cheese Soup. Not only a great cheese soup, but it made a heck of a queso dip.

Rold Gold Zesty Ranch Flavor Rush Pieces.

Summer of 2003.

Curse you Frito Lay for taking the one good snack away.

As someone that likes fizzy drinks and squash, but has an intolerance to artificial sweeteners, basically every fizzy drink that isn't Coca Cola is now off-limits.

The one I miss the most is Irn Bru. The "original" one in the bottle is fine, but the pre-sugar-tax Irn Bru was greatness in a can. Yet another way that Jamie Oliver has fucked the UK...

Grillmix shakers in Hungary. They had great flavours, we used them on everything... then one day they simply ceased to exist.

Banana Cow.

Not the new age bar drink but the old school member of the Strawberry Cow, Chocolate Cow syrups line for kids to make Chocolate/Strawberry/Banana milk.

I miss the fruit juice with whey that two large milk producers in my region used to sell, a decade or so ago. I'm almost sure that both companies stopped producing it altogether.

There was this candy back home called Choco bytes, which was essentially one of the pipe wafer things that a filled with chocolate but cut into small pieces, they tasted amazing but I think they were sold at a loss and so Cadbury pulled them. Loved those things and can't get a close enough equivalent any more.

Fresh & Easy frozen Indian meals, specifically the Chicken Makhani and the Methi Malai Chicken. It's been years since they left the US market and I still think about those 2. I've never found anything close.

In my non vegan days, President's Choice World of Flavours Buffalo Wing and Bleu cheese chips.
